Just outside the small but colorful mountain resort town of Foxboro, Tennessee lies Dr. Weirdman's Mountain Museum of Monsters, Curiosities, and Ancient Mysteries. A tourist draw for earlier generations it offered travelers the amusement of touring unusual underground caves, and pseudo-scientific exhibits ranging from strange creatures to the supposed artifacts of lost civilizations.
Now the museum is a crumbling relic of an older age, fallen into disrepair. Its long-time owner has died, leaving it in the hands of a younger distant relative who knows nothing of how to run a failing tourist-trap of a museum, but who is desperate to make a living and provide for his own children.
The museum has a serious ghost problem, though, and Ellie Jordan is called in from Savannah to help. An unexpected old friend joins Ellie at the last moment so they can spend a snow-filled Christmas together in the mountains...if the ghosts of the restless dead don't turn the holidays into a horrific tragedy.
The first installment of Catching Up With… features THE MONSTER MUSEUM, book #10 in J.L. Bryan’s Ellie Jordan Ghost Trapper series.
I could go on and on about how much I love J.L. Bryan’s books and writings, and I highly recommend any of his standalones and series for paranormal and horror lovers. This series features Ellie Jordan who investigates hauntings at the request of clients all over the south. With her tech-focused, side-kick employee Stacy, Ellie finds a way to deal with the ghosts as well as the families in all their weird, quirky situations.
In THE MONSTER MUSEUM, Ellie finds herself a bit further north than they usually travel for a case. This time she’s traveling solo from sunny Georgia for a picturesque, mountain town in Tennessee. While that’s still south in this Midwesterner’s world, the further away from home and her failed relationships with fireman Michael and his sister that never liked Ellie, the better at that moment. Finding herself investigating hauntings at a creepy museum over the Christmas holiday, Ellie finds invisible things there that are more dangerous than the black ice she encounters during the mountainous travels for this case.
What I loved about this book is Ellie’s willingness to put herself out there, whether it’s investigating on her own or easing into the possibility of a new relationship. Investigating alone breaks her number one rule, but she dives headfirst into the creepy museum and when interacting with the handsome, single father who now owns the place.
The tension of Ellie’s personal life going down the tubes while she takes a beating at every investigation has been ratcheting up from book to book. While the ghost of her mother and father’s murderer is getting closer to making Ellie join them, it’s terrifying to see just how close the danger comes to all Ellie holds dear. When an entity can travel, danger lurks everywhere.
The families involved, as well as the type of haunting, change with every book so it never feels stale or boring. Many quirky people and interesting settings make this series one that I come back to every time a new one is published. Excellent writing, great character development as well as fantastic pacing.
This book is available on Kindle Unlimited at the time of this post. It is also available on paperback, kindle, and also audiobook. Why not start at book one if you haven’t yet?
