In bestselling author Dianne Emley’s chilling new paranormal thriller, a beautiful woman’s romantic past comes back to haunt her in the form of an otherworldly visitor seeking justice.
Gorgeous and successful, Rory Langtry seemed to have it all. Daughter of a movie star and sister of a supermodel, Rory was engaged to sexy artist, Junior Lara. But her bright future went dark one terrible, bloody night that left her sister dead and the accused murderer—Junior—in an extended coma.
Now, five years later, Rory appears to have put the past behind her. She has a wonderful new fiancé and heads a successful cosmetics company. Yet dark secrets threaten. Across town, Junior lies close to death but before he departs he seeks to clear his name.
It starts with a feeling. It turns into a vision. Soon Rory is having sensations that only Junior could experience—from the horrifying to the erotic. Then she learns details about the awful night that only Junior could know, newfound knowledge with potentially fatal consequences. When another act of violence rocks her family, Rory plunges deeper into the unsolved mystery, led by an inexplicable visitor to a dangerous time and place where all will be revealed at last. But until then, Junior will not let her go.
I always love a good mystery/thriller featuring a family that isn’t all that it seems. Rory Langtry lost both her fraternal twin sister and her fiancee in the same night to murder. While her sister Anya died, her artist fiancee Junior Lara was left in a coma and had been accused of what appeared to be a murder suicide. But Junior’s family never bought the official police version of events and tried to blame Rory as the shooter, they were never able to prove it.
Five years later, Junior Lara’s art is worth a fortune while he lingers in a coma, but his body is giving out. His younger brother Danny has been spending an enormous amount of time at his bedside, and his once healthy physique is now sickly and emaciated as he waits and claims that he can communicate with Danny via telepathy. But Danny wants to get some closure for Junior before his inevitable death, and he decides to take the law into his own hands and confront Rory at a benefit for a non-profit foundation that she runs to help the families of victims of crime. But before Danny can exact his revenge, he’s shot dead by Rory’s step-father. And that’s when Rory’s life starts to spiral out of control and her mind slowly starts to be invaded by Junior’s, even though he’s laying in the hospital comatose.
Rory is a successful, strong-willed survivor, heading up her own cosmetics company and making a name for herself. She’s set to marry her fiancee Tom, and five years after the murder, her life seems back on track–she’s put the tragic past behind her. But the attack on her life by Junior’s brother lands her with a concussion and cognitive problems, opening up her mind to Junior’s just like it had Danny’s. When they’re linked, the only thing she can do is search to clear his name–even if that means delving deeper into her deceased sister’s history and her family’s dysfunctional workings.
I give The Night Visitor a 4.5 out of five. Full of mystery and suspense, the twists and turns of this well-written and engaging novel kept me glued to the screen of my Kindle. The characters are vivid and distinct, and I certainly couldn’t guess what would come next–which I loved. The paranormal aspects were subtle and slowly built, leading to a believable set of circumstances that was part tragic romance part drama. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves tightly written mysteries and thrillers, but who also like dysfunctional family dynamics of the rich that slowly unravel. It’s so fun to watch.
