For the month of August, we are celebrating our favorite author Katie McGarry. As part of the “Authors are Rockstars” tour, we decided to celebrate Katie not only for a single day, but for a whole month!
The Authors Are Rockstars Tour is hosted by the fantastic bloggers Fiktshun, Two Chicks on Books, Magical Urban Fantasy Reads. Thank you girls so much!!
Last week we had Katie over for an Interview and this week, we will tell you exactly why we love Katie’s Books, her writing, and just her as a person! And we have an epic giveaway, so stay tuned!
Katie McGarry Month Schedule:
- Interview with Katie McGarry – Friday, August 2nd
- Why we love Katie McGarry’s Writing & Characters – Friday, August 9th
- Interview with Katie’s Editor at HarlequinTEEN – Margo Lipschultz – today!
- Crash Into You Surprise!!! – Friday, August 23rd
We are truly excited to have Margo here today! She’s Katies Editor at Harlequin TEEN and we got a chance to meet her at BEA this year. Margo is absolutely wonderful and when Katie talks about how she loves working with her, it makes us love her even more!
So please welcome Margo Lipschultz today!
Margo, when we meet Katie this year in New York, she kept telling how amazing it is to work with you, that you both just “clicked”. Now, we are super excited that you take your time to help us celebrate Katie as our Author Rockstar – which she definitely is to us!
I’m thrilled to be participating in this celebration of the fabulous Katie McGarry! She’s always been a rock star in my book. Katie and I definitely clicked right from our very first phone conversation about Pushing the Limits, and I’m always amazed by her insights into her characters and her vision for making each of her books a uniquely memorable reading experience.
What’s a typical day for you like (or is there such a thing)?
Most days I typically divide my time between the following activities:
-Answering emails and phone calls (from authors, agents, and colleagues in all departments at Harlequin)
-Attending meetings to discuss cover art, marketing plans, publicity, production timelines, digital promotion, publication strategies for each of our authors, industry changes or new acquisitions
-Phone calls with authors to discuss the current draft of their manuscript—collaborating with authors is one of my favorite parts of the job!
I’m sure you noticed that I didn’t mention editing or reading submissions as a routine daily activity—that’s because it rarely gets done during the workday! Nights and weekends are when I do the bulk of my reading and editing.
What’s your favorite aspect of your relationship with Katie?
Aside from the fact that I just love reading Katie’s manuscripts, I particularly love our phone (or in-person) conversations to discuss her early drafts. Katie is so receptive to hearing feedback on her stories, and no matter what question I ask her about her characters’ lives or motives, she always has a deeply thought out response. That collaborative approach allows me to understand Katie’s behind-the-scenes writing process and results in us being on the same wavelength in terms of any revisions we might be discussing.
What is your favorite story from Katie and why?
I love all of Katie’s books equally. Each of them shatters my heart into millions of pieces and then puts it together again in the most remarkably uplifting way. That said, there will always be a special place in my heart for Pushing the Limits, the story that first introduced me to Katie’s phenomenal talent. I never get tired of reading rave reviews about Echo and Noah from teens and adults alike.
If you could pitch a story for Katie to write, what would it be?
That’s a great question! I wish I had a good answer, but the truth is I will read any story Katie wants to write. I’m very excited about her upcoming books with Harlequin TEEN!
What would you say is the most amazing thing about being an Editor at HarlequinTEEN?
Definitely the people—the authors we publish are incredibly talented, and my colleagues on the Editorial, Marketing, Art, Sales and Digital teams are a brilliant, passionate, supportive and very fun group. The bloggers and teen readers I’ve met have also been wonderfully enthusiastic, and I always enjoy talking about new books and old favorites with them.
Do you only edit Young Adult, or do you also have some other genres you work on?
I actually edit a wide variety of fiction titles across several genres, including Young Adult (contemporary and paranormal), New Adult and all kinds of romance. Reading is one of my favorite activities, and I feel fortunate to have a job that allows me to work on books I truly love, with authors I greatly admire.
Wasn’t this a wonderful and exciting interview?? And yes, we were especially surprised to hear how much else Margo has to do and that editing is something she does on the weekend!!

About Crash Into You
Coming November 26th 2013 by Harlequin Teen
From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane
The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that’s who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers…and she’s just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can’t get him out of her mind.
Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.
But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they’ll go to save each other.

I love Katie McGarry from the very first line of Pushing the Limits. It’s absolutely one of the most emotional YA novels. Ever. I love her writing style most specifically. Also her characterizations. It’s realistic!

Even though I would be a complete failure as an editor, I think it would be so much fun, particularly for authors as amazing as Katie! It’s fabulous that Katie’s so receptive to feedback, that would probably be my biggest issue if I ever tried to write anything. I’d be all IT’S PERFECT WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT and people reading it would just be like um, no. 🙂
It was so much fun to meet Margo at BEA this year, I hope she and Katie are there next year as well:)

I think her books really look at the tough issues of being a teenager – relationships with parents, siblings, friends, and significant others that aren’t exactly easy.

Katie McGarry won me over from the very first line of Pushing The Limits. “My father is a control freak, I hate my stepmother, my brother is dead and my mother has… well… issues.” Katie possesses such a poise and elegance to which she projects onto her writing and it makes her books powerful and me unable to put them down. I read Pushing the Limits, Crossing the Line, and Dare You To in the course of five days and cannot wait until Crash into You comes out. Katie McGarry has become one of my favorite authors.

I would like to ask Margo if it is as exciting to launch a new author as it sounds and does a book hitting the best seller lists still thrill her?

Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any recommendations for inexperienced blog writers? I’d certainly appreciate it.
