(a pseudonym you will understand after reading the book..)
Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.
But they know. They caught Number One in Malaysia.Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They killed them all.I am Number Four.I am next.
This was a surprising read! Normally I don’t like to read storys about Aliens but the synopsis sounded so interesting that I picked it up! Only later I found out that this book will be a movie that comes out already next year! Holy cow, this is exciting! But first let’s talk about the book:
The story is about a boy who is one of 9 people from another planet. They had to escape after their planet got attacked by bad bad aliens. The 9 kids were send to Earth with a “Guardian” to keep hidden separately and wait for the day the can go back and bring their beloved planet back to live.
John is one of them, he’s Number 4 and they can only be killed in order, so he’s save until 1, 2 and 3 get killed.
He and his guardian Henry move to a little town called Paradise. They move every six month so John never had the chance to make friends or even fall in love. The 9 kids will eventually develop some “gifts” that are called Legacies and John has yet to develop them. This all changes in Paradise.
He falls in love with a beautiful girl and he makes his first friend ever: Sam.
What captured me most about this story was the building relationship between the characters. John and Henri, although not really related act more like father and son and it’s absolutely lovely!! When John does something dump (well, he’s still a teenager ..) Henri just hugs him and shows his affection to him instead of being angry. Henri is the Dad everyone dreams of…
Then there is Sam, a boy that never really had friends but now befriends with John. Sam will play a big role later in the plot and I cannot deny that I absolutely loved his bravery and loyalty to his friend!
When John starts to develop his gifts the plot moves forward pretty quick and soon he has to face the decision to leave town again or stay and fight. But John doesn’t want to move, he made friends for the first time in live and he fell in love, obviously he would do anything not to move again.
Seriously I was crying like an idiot for the last 15% of the book, it was devastating! Real and serious sobbing…. Specially in the last fourth of the book so much is happening and everything before just was a build up for this part, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. There was so much surprising character development which was just incredible good!! I can tell that my favorite character in the end was a dog 🙂 I don’t say more!
I can absolutely recommend the story and the only reason why I gave it not fully 5 was that I found the fighting scenes in the end a bit too long for my liking and I would have loved to get to know Sarah (his girlfriend) better, I felt that she was the poorest developed character, specially compared to all the other ones which were really great and won my heart so easily!
hm…do I need to say more? |
I have a good feeling with this movie, already seeing the trailer tells me how much of the book will be inside this movie…

Oh My Swooooon! Alex Pettyfer is so freaking pretty!
Well, Danny, I'm glad to know your thoughts on this one because I recently read a review in which the reviewer was not a fan of the book at all. It is great to read two very different perspectives on it and make some comparisons. I own this book and every since I saw the movie trailer, I've been wanting to read it. Now I feel more excited to give it a try, so thank you.

Gregory loved this book and gave me a play by play – know what you mean about the ending. Of course I'm dying to see the movie which has so many of our favorite actors. Thanks for the video and Pettyfer eye-candy!

When I was searching YouTube for the trailer I watched also a few times, just to make sure I post the right trailer, *winks*. I really have a good feeling about the movie adaption, so it's totally save reading first the book and then watch the movie and enjoy both!

The eye-candy… there were so many pictures of him that look so great and I had a hard time choosing one! The ending was a bit too long for my taste and it ends with this shitty cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more -now!!!

This book is awesome. I was in tears myself at the end. I can't wait for the movie. I'm surprised I don't see more buzz about it on the blogosphere. Thanks for stopping by my site. I agree with you. I adore both the boys in Nightshade. I hate that either one of them has to come out the loser…*sigh*….

I picked this book up last week and I'm super excited to read it. I also love how Alex Pettyfer has someone managed to insert himself as the de facto male lead in the big screen adaptations of YA books. His name is always coming as a Jace or Peeta. I love him.
