I’ve enjoyed all of the Heather Graham’s books, and Danger In Numbers is no exception. Set in Florida, two murders that seem to be more ritualistic than random have occurred, and suspicions of a cult being responsible arise very early due to the crime scenes. A younger special agent and her older and wiser partner are assigned the case when a body is discovered mutilated on a cross near the Everglades, and soon thereafter the FBI show up to take over the investigation.
Special Agent Amy Larson works for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and along with her partner John Schultz, she investigates some of the worst crimes in Florida. When her partner is sidelined with health issues, she’s forced to team up with one humble, handsome, and professional Special Agent Hunter Forrest. He has already started to investigate another body that was discovered in Northern Florida for the FBI, and he transitions into the lead role quite easily–much to Amy’s dismay.
Amy is capable, strong, and quite talented in the drawing of crime scenes. Hunter notices her strengths right away and encourages her to come into her own a bit more. Hunter’s past investigating cults gives him a little bit of a leg up, but once Amy and Hunter start crisscrossing the state during their investigation, that’s when things start to heat up between the two.
There is a flashback storyline sprinkled throughout the book, and I was pleasantly surprised at how that turned out in the end. I won’t spoil it since it adds much to the present day story.
Multiple points of view give a well-rounded look at this story. While there were several red herrings throughout, the bad guy is named pretty early on in the story, so it wasn’t a surprise when he turned out to be culpable for the murders. But what was nice and surprising were who from the cast of characters were involved with the big evil. That definitely kept me guessing throughout the book.
I give Danger in Numbers a four out of five. The Florida setting was nice to see, from the dangerous Everglades to the isolated small towns, all crawling with alligators and insects that this Midwestern doesn’t want to see out in the real world. The romance between Amy and Hunter was pleasant and didn’t take over the book, which was a nice change of pace from other romantic thrillers. The cast of characters were unique enough to keep everyone straight. I did however, feel that Hunter was much more fleshed out than Amy. Since the book ends with a nice set up for another installment, maybe we’ll get to see deeper into Amy’s past in book two.
