Sleepy Hollow isn't so sleepy anymore…

One night, New York FBI agent Aiden Mahoney receives a visitor in a dream—an old friend named Richard Highsmith. The very next day he's sent to Sleepy Hollow because Richard's gone missing there.

Maureen—Mo—Deauville now lives in the historic town and works with her dog, Rollo, to search for missing people. She's actually the one to find Richard…or more precisely his head, stuck on a statue of the legendary Headless Horseman.

Mo and Aiden, a new member of the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI's unit of paranormal investigators, explore both past and present events to figure out who betrayed Richard, who killed him and now wants to kill them, too. As they work together, they discover that they share an unusual trait—the ability to communicate with the dead. They also share an attraction that's as intense as it is unexpected…if they live long enough to enjoy it!

The Betrayed is another fabulous installment in the Krewe of Hunters series, featuring an FBI group of paranormal investigators that are called in when the crimes could use a bit of help from the supernatural to solve along with good old fashioned police work to solve. I love that each book is a stand alone novel steeped in the rich history of the locale, and this installment features Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, New York. Each book pairs up an agent and a regular person, and in this book, a regular agent has been newly recruited into the Krewe from the New York Field Division and works with the very special woman who has a search and rescue dog.

Once Mo Deauville and her dog Rollo found missing Senator Richard Highsmith’s head staked to a Headless Horseman statue, their job is  just beginning as the local police enlist her help to find the rest of the body. But when the search turns up another headless body of the wrong gender as well as Richard’s body, the cops welcome the extra help from the FBI in Agent Aiden Mahoney and his colleagues in the Krewe. For Aiden, finding Richard’s killer is more than a professional responsibility because they were childhood friends, and coming back to Sleepy Hollow is a homecoming of sorts for him. When it looks like the killings may be tied to a centuries old traitor and his relatives, Aiden turns to Mo since she knows the local history and legends so well. But there’s also that undeniable spark and attraction between them that can’t be denied–even in the face of danger.

Mo is such a refreshing character. She has a very high rate of success in finding who she’s searching for with her search dog Rollo, but it’s not just because he’s such a great sniffer. Mo can see ghosts and hear spirits, and she even lives with two ghosts in her centuries old cottage in the woods.  She’s smart, a straight shooter and a loyal friend, but she’s also very skittish when it comes to men because she wants a committed relationship. All in all, she’s living a very fulfilling life freelance designing greeting cards and doing the search and rescue thing. Finding lost people–hopefully alive–is why she moved out of New York City into Sleepy Hollow in the first place.

Aiden has no idea why he was recruited for the Krewe. If he had any supernatural abilities, they are long gone he thinks–that is until he hears his friend Richard’s voice in a dream the morning after he disappeared. That’s why he fearlessly charged right into this investigation and didn’t back down, not when it was clear that there weren’t many leads. He’s determined, resourceful, and doesn’t back down from a fight, but most of all, he doesn’t scare easily. And he finds himself drawn to Mo just as much as she is to him.

I give The Betrayed a 4.5 out of 5. This book is perfect for Halloween and Fall, featuring spooky cemeteries and beheadings, crypts and mausoleums, plenty of history such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving thrown in for good measure. After reading The Hexed a few weeks ago, I get the feeling that Heather Graham definitely has a formula for writing these types of books, but she mixes things up with her characters and places that it makes each one enjoyable and keeps it fresh. Aiden and Mo’s relationship was a slow burn, but it definitely paid off when they finally get together. I loved the history, the places, the atmosphere, the writing. Overall, I really love this series and I’m definitely a loyal follower now.
