Danny’s Week
Even though it’s summer, the weather this week has been ugly here in Germany. Rain, cold and basically non-summery feelings. Too bad we had an “Open Door” on Thursday this week in our faculty, where we would have loved a little sunshine!
This event has been lots of fun last year, we had lots booth for each field in biology, that is represented at our faculty. Then we also set up “fake labs” to show a little what we are doing every day. Lot’s of classes from schools are visiting and we can talk to them what it means studying biology in Munich.
We also paired this event with a faculty party where we have a BBQ in the evening and some drinks. Highlight of the faculty party is always the “Award for Outstanding Teaching” which is always given by the student boy to one Professor or Lecturer who .. well deserves it.
……And much to my utter amazement, I got this award this year!
I was so so touched, the speech from the students completely moved me! I would have never guessed a few years ago that I would find so much passion in teaching, but I just completely adore it. Working with talented students, helping them with problems and just seeing them grow into amazing scientist completely fulfills me which is why this award means so much to me!
So uhm.. yes I had a great week..I’d say 😉
In terms of Reading? Since his week was so busy I didn’t have time for lots of reading. But I finished The Young World, which was such a fun read and I started The Fire Wish by Amber Lough! I’m so in love right now Young Adult Fantasy that I was completey thrilled when I got a Review Copy! I’m just about 20% in and even though the beginning was a little slow, I think it will pick up now, which is why I’m going back to reading right now!
Heather’s Week
Congrats, Danny on your teaching award. It’s always nice to be recognized like that, especially when it’s by your students!
I went back to work after having a week off for vacation, so needless to say, it was a long week. Getting used to rising at 4:30 am and hopping a train to commute into the city to be at work by 7 am was a bit hard to get used to after waking up whenever we felt like it for over a week. That being said, I mostly took a nap on the morning train ride, so I spent the afternoon portion reading The Forever Man by Pierre Ouellette. I’m reading this near future thriller for the author’s blog tour, and his imaginings of what the United States will be like soon as both frightening and so smartly drawn. I also started the audiobook The Oversight by Charlie Fletcher. I’m enjoying this magical world set in the past in England so far.
Season two of Witches of East End just started back up on Sunday on Lifetime. It’s based on the novels by Melissa de la Cruz and I haven’t read the books, but this show is a bit of a hot mess guilty pleasure. Sort of like a soap opera. There’s just not much new on during the summer…
Pushy’s Week
OMG, Danny!!! This is awesome!!! I know how great that kind of recognition can be and I completely agree that it’s well deserved! I love when you talk science with me!! Like Heather, it was back to work for me this week as well, but thankfully I’m not up as early as she is so it was more pleasant for me.
This week was quite busy (what with going back to work and all…) but I finished up my books from last week and started on an ARC I got for a tour, Made for You by Melissa Marr. I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by Ms. Marr, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing where this one goes!

Ooh, CONGRATS, Danny! Always nice to be acknowledged for your good work. And boo to having to get up so early, Heather! That’s the hardest thing about coming back from vacation, I think. Pushy, I enjoyed Made For You — more realistic than most other Marr’s but still good!

It was only hard to get up for work that first day. I’m used to it after having this schedule for 11 years.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Danny!
Heather, I have the opposite problem from you with tv shows in the summer. I can’t keep up with several because they come on when I want to snooze – Mistresses on ABC, Teen Wolf on MTV, Covert Affairs on USA, 3 Musketeers on BBC America, Beauty & The Beast on the CW and now this new show, Extant on CBS. If you like sci-fi and thrillers, definitely check out Extant starring Halle Berry & Goran Visnjic who was the villain on ABC cancelled show Red Widow. Extant premiered this past Wednesday and it’s well done out the gate which isn’t always the case with new shows.

I also watch Teen Wolf and Beauty and the Beast (although that one’s done for now). I saw the preview for Extant, so I’ll have to check it out since you think it’s good so far. Thanks for the tip!

Heather, I am seriously behind on B&B. I always fall asleep on it even though I really enjoy the show. I’ve been trying to catch up online but without much success. I hope that you like Extant. =)

I’m hoping to read The Oversight sometime soon. I really seriously have way too many books and should probably just stop accepting books for like 6 months to get caught up (fat chance of that)
Congrats on the award Danny!
