Don’t Sweat.  Don’t Laugh.  Don’t draw attention to yourself.  And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him.  He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood.  Gene is a human, and he knows the rules.  Keep the truth a secret.  It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him.  He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Let me preface by telling you that I started this book with no real expectations. The synopsis sounded intriguing enough, the cover looks great and I thought I was up for a great read. I had no idea what I was getting into and I ended up having one of the most amazing and thrilling rides with this book… Be aware! It’s getting… Dark!

Hello Cruel and Horrible World (..of which I do not wish to be part of … )

*shivers* Humans are nearly extinct. Our world is ruled by some blood and flesh-eating monsters for which we are a delicacy. Ieek! They are a mix of Zombies and Vampires, which I found was a very unique mix! There isn’t much that is human about them anymore which makes it even harder for the reader to comprehend this new world. But at the same time, it was utterly darkly thrilling and fascinating… They have different gestures and habits, which seems extremely foreign and alien for us! Sometimes even to the point of disgusting. But, this you have to explore yourself while reading, just … be warned!

Although there are nearly no humans anymore, those that survived have to hide between those monsters. They have to make them all believe they are one of them and if you slip once… well, you are the next lunch!

Gene! Yes, we get a Boy’s POV and he’s awesome!

Gene is one of those humans that hide between these monsters and his father trained him well. He knows exactly how to survive and how to not attract attention! He’s smart, but he tries to hide his intellect at school. He’s a loner, but what other choice does he has among kids who would love nothing more than to eat him! Gene has a smart and great voice and I loved to listen and follow his journey of survival. His needs to be even smarter and sharper when he drew one of the lucky numbers that got him invited to join The Hunt – which is .. a hunt for humans! Suddenly everything is at stake!

Gene was in constant struggle to survive and to hide. At the same time, he had to be careful not to lose his humanity since he is utterly alone among those beings… After he lost his father he had no one to remind him what he truly is!

Twisted, Dark, Thrilling and Disturbingly Fascinating!

This story was a ride like nothing else I’ve read before. It was so dark and I was constantly on edge and afraid for Gene to be discovered. And although I was disgusted by these monsters, at the same time there was no way to put this book down, no way for me not to know how this story goes on. There wasn’t a dull moment in this book, there wasn’t a moment where you could let you guard down, the plot was constantly and mercilessly moving forward!  There was one moment in the middle where I was ready for a break, where the plot slowed down a little, but the author was incredible smart and threw in a twist  that made me gasp and forgotten was the pause I intended to have… Actually, there were a lot of surprises I didn’t see coming which made the story just more gripping for me! I love to be surprised in a good, but also in a bad way!

The was a little romance in the book, but it didn’t dominate the story and it didn’t dictate Gene’s actions completely. He stayed true to himself and his survival instinct always won the battle! It felt real and honest!

Bewitched Rating

*This book definitely needed a special creepy rating dolls!! and.. all 5 of them!!

Bottom Line

The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda is utterly disturbing, dark, twisted and gross, but incredibly fascinating at the same time. Gene was a smart and sharp hero I loved to follow, he’s one of those perfect examples why Boy POV’s rock! The ending was incredible with a cliffhanger that will leave you hanging and wanting more  – right now! If you are up for a thrilling ride then go and get The Hunt!

Additional Info: I am a sucker for a good book trailer and while there is no US trailer version available,  I want to share the UK version with you!! Enjoy! *shivers* Be warned!

Ok seriously, are you up for such a dark creepy tale ???

Much Love,

I also don’t necessarily pick up a creepy book, but I didn’t expect this to be that creepy when I picked it up. But damn it, I am so glad I did!! It was phenomenal !! The cover is quite catching:))

  3. Twisted and dark you say? I do love books like that, though the gross part has me a bit wary. I can be extremely squeamish when reading or watching movies, so that may be a deciding factor in whether or not I pick this one up. Still, it sounds super intense and interesting and I really want to read it:) Awesome review Danny!

  4. The vampires were so revolting, weren’t they? I was tense and scared for Gene through the whole fantastic book. Great review, Danny! I’ll definitely read the sequel when it’s out.

Oh noes!!! I took me a long time even labeling them Vampire’s. Seriously, the are so far away from anything remotely human .. *shivers*

  5. This was one of your best reviews. I totally meant to grab this on NG and then got sidetracked and forgot and now I am kicking myself. I mean dark, gross twisted vampires and zombies..scary! I am sure this is dark, disturbing and suoer scary. What does that say about me, the person who wants to read this. Wait! Don’t answer that! Love the voodoo doll as the rating.

Oh *blushes* Thanks hon!! Glad you liked it! Yes I also nearly passed on it, I am glad I didn’t and I was glad I went into it without having so many ideas about the story. Sure, I knew what the synopsis told me, but that’s it. I didn’t expect it to be so dark, twisted and scary!! I was glad I read it at daytime!

The Creepy Rating Dolls? There was no way to take the sunshine poppy dolls for such a dark book 🙂

  6. I didn’t have high expectations of The Hunt either, but it completely surpassed my expectations too! I loved the darkness, but also the uniqueness of the vampires – there were so many ideas that I’ve never come across before it was also a refreshing read. And Gene IS a great male character!

I just love when this happens, when you read a book and then you are so blown away! Truly, those Vampire Monsters were incredible and how the author had so many new ideas how to make them even less human was amazing!

This book sounds amzing.I love how you described the vampires, it’s exactly the way vampires should be, creepy and evil masters of the night (like in Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan)… I have not read this yet,but you have definitely put it on my radar, I’ll be reading it soon. Gene sounds like an interesting characters, I like them smart, and good male POVs are hard to find…

Oh May 8th is not that far… it’s there before you know! And, this is a serious pre-order!!

Gosh, these Vampires here exceed any creepy Vampire’s I’ve meet before. Often there is something appealing about Vampires, even if they are bad ass – here? Not so much! There is nothing even remotely appealing… *shivers* They are just so super duper creepy and disgusting!

You truly have to meet Gene!!

Hope you are going to like it!!

Oh but if you have a copy then please by all means go ahead and read it!! I wasn’t sure myself and I was so glad I just dove in and read it… And this one is a great Guy POV , Gene is great! Driven by survival but in the end.. he’s a little tragic since he’s so alone!

  9. As disgusting as it sounds, it also sound super fascinating and creepy! Did you read Pure by Julianna Baggott? Lots of ppl couldn’t take the weirdness but I was like BRING IT!! Bahah. I think I’ll really like this it sounds right up my alley with the weirdness and dark plot! The part “Twisted, Dark, Thrilling and Disturbingly Fascinating!” Really has me SUPER excited for this. I live for books that have me on edge like that! Great review Danny you definitely sell this one! 🙂 I’m glad I have it from NG or I would die. Lol

I had no idea that there would be some parts that would be so repelling …but I was glad I didn’t know upfront since I might not have read it!!! I did read Pure, but sadly I didn’t like it at all… There were also some disgusting parts but it was not the part that I disliked most, I didn’t care for the characters…at all!

I’m glad my review made you a little more excited about that one and I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!!! You have to start right now:))
