Imagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise.
Alexander, Macedonia’s sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world but finds himself drawn to newcomer Katerina, who must navigate the dark secrets of court life while hiding her own mission: kill the Queen. But Kat’s first love, Jacob, will go to unthinkable lengths to win her, even if it means competing for her heart with Hephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince. And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander’s unmet fiancée, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters.
Weaving fantasy with the salacious and fascinating details of real history, New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman reimagines the greatest emperor the world has ever known: Alexander the Great, in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series
Oh you guys… lately I have been so in love with epic fantasy that Legacy of Kings came just perfectly for my taste, and,… it’s been so so so epic!!!
Mixing historical fiction with amazing fantasy elements!
What you first need to understand about this novel is that is comes with an incredibly blend of history, fiction and fantasy elements – woven together in an incredibly thrilling and exciting story. This is the story of Alexander The Great – but, in a world where magic still exits and its very very real! I truly loved and admired the way Eleanor took historical fiction and made is read like any “completely fictional story. The magic is not taking center stage, but rather adds some enchanting elements to an already great story.
Vivid character with amazing character development and… makes you wish for more!
Besides Alexander, there are a lot of characters that are important for the story and each one of them is so carefully and wonderfully developed that it was great to get to know them on a deeper level. Not only do we slowly get to know them, we also see already a lot of character development and more importantly, some hints about what is yet to come for them. Some character might have come up a little too short, but this first book is all about setting the stage for the next books. I didn’t feel disconnected to the main character Alexander and Katerina, who were vividly displayed.
Don#t get me wrong, the story is not just a first book – it also comes already with some amazing twists and some surprises that made this story thrilling and mesmerizing. Especially the last part was completely thrilling and took yet another turn you didn’t see coming!
Bewitched Rating
Bottom Line
Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman was nothing else than epic! The way these historical events and characters are reimagined in this fictional and magical world was truly amazing and hold me captive from the first to the last page!

I don’t think I realized this involved alternate history. That is very intriguing!

Aah, I’m still slightly conflicted about Legacy of Kings. On one hand the historical aspect really really appeals to me but then I’ve heard the book has about six different points of view which I don’t think would work for me at all. I’m glad to hear you connected with all of the characters though and that there were lots of twists 🙂 Great review!
