The last thing Mason Starling remembers is the train crossing a bridge. An explosion . . . a blinding light . . . then darkness. Now she is alone, stranded in Asgard—the realm of Norse legend—and the only way for her to get home is to find the Spear of Odin, a powerful relic left behind by vanished gods.

The Fennrys Wolf knows all about Asgard. He was once trapped there. And he’ll do whatever it takes to find the girl who’s stolen his heart and bring her back—even if it means a treacherous descent into the Underworld. But time is running out, and Fenn knows something Mason doesn’t: If she takes up the Spear, she’ll set in motion a terrible prophecy. And she won’t just return to her world . . . she’ll destroy it.

In this pulse-pounding sequel to Starling, Lesley Livingston delivers another electrifying blend of nonstop action and undeniable romance that will leave readers breathless.

Last year, the first book in this series Starling totally rocked my world! I adore a good Paranormal story and when they even have a good twist, I like them even more! The Startling series plays heavily with all kind of old Lore, but focuses a lot on Nordic Lore which I found incredible fascinating!

Strong kick ass Characters and a colorful set of secondary characters

When I read and fully emerge in a book I need to connect with the characters, and I do love a good character development – strong connections between the characters and outstanding supporting characters! In the Starling series we have an epic cast of characters in my opinion. Mason, the main character is a wonderfully strong girl, who is sweet but can also majorly kick ass. The chemistry between her and the swoon worthy (and equally kick ass) Fenris Wolf is nearly palpable.

Then there are all these supporting characters who I have a hard time calling that as they play important roles in the development of the story and their colorful uniqueness wonderfully stands out.  I guess I could write a whole page just about how amazing they all are and how diverse and fascinating. There is a god among them, we have werewolves, more gods from different cultures, some Fairy Guards, some normal people.. and.So.Much.More!

Stunning Fast Pasted Sequel, Fascinating ancient lore!

You know how it is with Sequels, often they disappoint feel like a filler or are just a downright disappointment. Descendant was nothing like this! It was a well rounded sequel that moves the story of Ragnarok – which basically is the event that leads to the end of the world (yes, it#s that dramatic) forward at a nice pace and with some amazing twists and unexpected turns.

Not only did I love the overall development of the story, I also very much loved all the lore behind it! There is not just Nordic Lore, but many different ones like Greek Mythology also comes into play. This makes the whole series so very fascinating and wonderfully unique!

Bottom Line

As it is always hard to review a sequel, all I can tell you that if you love the paranormal, and if you love strong characters and if you then also love a good romance then this series needs to be on your reading list! Descendant by Lesley Livingston was an outstanding sequel that delivered everything I was hoping for it not more! The romance was sweet and the chemistry undeniable!

Quote from my Startling Review (Book 1)

Starling comes with a phenomenal and thrilling set of characters. Girls can swoon over Fenrys and connect to Mason. The gorgeous New Yorker setting adds to an incredible story that only scratched the surface of an ancient lore. Starling will easily be one of my favorite paranormal series where I will eagerly await the sequel.

  • Wondrous Strange Series Review – (set in the same universe as Starling but can be read completely separately)

Audiobook Ramblings!

If you like to listen to audiobooks than this series is perfect for you too!!! Here, we have the very special case that the author Lesley Livingston narrates her books herself! Besides being an wonderful author she is also an actor, and she is such an amazing narrator! I love listening to her voice and since she knows her characters like no one else, she always makes the voices just perfect and right!

I still have to read the first book in the series but it looks awesome! And mythology is one of my favorite sub genres.

  3. Check. Check and check…. yes I love all those things in my paranormal reads. I am wondering why I haven’t read this series yet. It is always terrific when the sequel lives up to the first book and even surpasses it! I am adding this to the TBR right now!

  5. Right. So. I obviously need to actually read this series. I’m a nut for Greek mythology first, and other mythology and lore a very close second. This one sounds like it would be right up my alley! Thanks for sharing your review (even if it does force me to add two books to my TBR list…)

  6. Oh yeah! This one came the other day and I need to read it. I loved Starling. I am loving this new mythology!! So glad you enjoyed it and to know the romance is good. That answers one question about what happens with the bridge and Mason and the Fenris Wolf. Love that guy!
