12 Rounds by Lauren Hammond with a Guest Post from Lauren and a Giveaway!
and now welcome Lauren Hammond :
The”New Adult” Genre by Lauren Hammond
First off, thank so much for having me!
I am super excited to get started on this guest post!
I love the bridge between YA and adult. New Adult. I wouldn’t think of it so much as a need, but more of as I want. I want it, I don’t know about anyone else. I want New Adult because the characters are still in their youth, still learning, but going through different life experiences. I can say this, my mindframe was completely different at 18 than it was when I was 15. My experiences were different. At 28, my experiences are vastly different than they were when I was 18.
To me, the bridge is important because you’re kind of in limbo between the ages of 18-22. You’re trying to discover yourself, who you are, where you want to go in life, what you want to be. I like to read about those things. I like to be able to bring those experiences and discoveries out in my books. Plus, you have more room to push boundaries. NA is not quite YA, but not quite adult because of the mindframe of the characters. But there’s room for darker topics, edgier material. For someone like me who enjoys reading and writing such things this genre is a perfect fit.
The interesting part is, sometimes, through the characters,(and I don’t know if this is just me) but I feel like I can relive that portion of fun my life over again. It’s thrilling in a way. During that portion of your life(for me anyway) I felt the world was both terrifying and exciting. It’s like you’re just getting started on your journey through and you have no idea where the road will lead you. That’s a beautiful thing. At 15 you’re still with your parents, still operating on a school-like schedule. At 18, you’re in college, you’re on your own. You get your first real taste of freedom and independence and that (again to me) is a liberating feeling.
If you guys get a chance, check out 12 Rounds.
I love this post as it exactly mirrors my feelings about New Adult! And pushing the boundaries is exactly why I love New Adult books so much, they have more room for drama and tension than YA!
12 Rounds
Sean (Right-Hook) Reilly knows a few things about himself. One, he’s the middle-weight boxing champion of the world with an undefeated record. Two, women find his cocky persona, chiseled biceps, and inked body sexy. Also, the fact that it’s known that he doesn’t do relationships only adds to his sex appeal. And three, he’s Irish, proud of it, and a member of the Braithreachas Don Saol, a branch of the Irish mafia and king pins of the drug cartel taking over the streets of Cleveland.
Connor Doyle(aka Connie) the boss and leader of the Braithreachas Don Saol, has been like a father to Sean, taking him under his wing and teaching him how to survive on the streets after the death of his parents. Sean has never been ungrateful, but has always wanted one thing…
More. More to live for. More to fight for. More to believe in. A chance at a future without drugs or guns. A chance at a future without wondering which day will be his last.
There’s only one problem with that. You live by the braithreachas. You die by the braithreachas. And Sean knows whether Connie considers him to be family or not, the only way he’ll be leaving the braithreachas is in a body bag.
Hadlee Flax has had a year to overcome her issues. After almost being raped and brutalized, she’s putting her best foot forward, seeing a therapist, and has even(with some persuasion from her best friend, Lara) enrolled in self defense classes. And she’s doing well moving on with her life until she meets the dark, and conflicted Irish boxing champion of the world, Sean Reilly.
Hadlee is immediately drawn to the gorgeous, cold, and mysterious man who speaks with a slight Irish brogue. She soon learns that there is much more to him than his darkened gaze, cool demeanor, and body covered in tattoos. He’s not the type of man she thought he was. And Hadlee finds herself doing something she never thought she would do in the last year…
Falling for a guy.
Falling for Sean Reilly. A man who is on the path to becoming a boxing legend.
One thing Hadlee doesn’t know is the other part of Seans’ life. His life of drug running, and killing. Or the fact that when he’s not boxing he’s walking the streets with a gat tucked into the back of his loose jeans, and glancing over his shoulder at every turn.
But it doesn’t take Hadlee long to learn that some attractions and relationships can be fatal.
And sometimes…
They just might be worth fighting for.

This sounds like a really good book! Sort of like a more adulty version of the Perfect Chemistry books (which I absolutely loved).

This one sounds fantastic!
I love new adult books for the same reasons. It’s surprising it’s not really existed until now.

I LOVED this book!! And I’m so glad you loved it too. I was privileged to edit this one for Lauren. I tell you it’s books like hers that make me live my job!
Have you checked out her other books? She has another NA series the first two books are out already. Insanity and White Walls. Then her YA series The Sociopath Diaries. The first book is A Whisper To A Scream. It’s freaking phenomenal!

Wow, this book sounds amazing! The Irish mob?! Awesome!
When I was in my NA years I didn’t read much. I was too busy working and partying. But I like to read it now cause it brings me back to then and how different things were. Its like I was still a teen in many ways but with adult responsibilities.

I like New Adult for the exact reasons you described above. It captures the experiences of a young adult without the filters and constraints of the YA genre.

I love NA, because a lot of the times it’s juicier and steamier than YA, but it isn’t that hard on topics that go through Adult Contemporary. I’m in that NA age group so you could say that I prefer it for that exact reason. Just love ’em!

Would you look at that cover? Whuh. It’s so…delicious. Where was I for the casting of this photo shoot I ask you?I can run my hands down a half naked man’s chest with the best of them Danny!
I love this genre because it takes things a little further than YA is able to go, and I like that it can be darker and hotter. Plus, the guys tend to be a little olde so I don’t feel quite so inappropriate in my love for them:)

I love NA because it is more intense and hotter. Thanks for the giveaway. Please enter me. Tore923@aol.com

Ooh, that cover–very sexay! And the whole story sounds hot what with the alpha men and boxing and all that jazz. I do agree that there needs to be more emphasis on that bridge between teen and adult–it’s such an amazing, crazy and wonderful time that it’s just brimming with stories.

I am loving new adult because it is the best of both worlds. it still have a YA feel to it as in the characters are young but they are more my age (early 20s a lot of the time) plus the are spicier which I love, love, love. Being 24 (eep 25 in 2 weeks) I feel like new adult is the perfect category for me.

I love New Adult for the same reasons you can get into Adult topics without worrying about your subject matter being too edgy and it is nice to differentiate books out of YA that are more appropriate for mature readers. Fantastic post, This sounds like a terrific read!

I love how New Adult books incorporate an edgier theme to traditional YA books, and are more applicable to people my age, who are in college and/or their early twenties and want books that fit with people going through similar life experiences. They’re a great new category for my age group!

I enjoy reading about characters trying to find themselves. They aren’t sure who they are and love is relatively new to me.

Aaaah! I LOVE this post!<3 Thanks for inviting Lauren here. She's awesome and she obviously has great taste in books. 😀 And you know by now that I'm obsessed with NA lit: it brings something more intense, edgy and sexy to the YA and, but it's not as dramatic and overwhelming as the adult books. And just like Lauren said, it's about that limbo age between 18 and 22 when you still figure things out and try to decide what you want to do with your life. Everyone goes through that, but not many write about it (yet).
P.S. This book sounds awesome and right up my alley! *adds book to to-be-read-asap list*

Great guest post! I really have no thoughts on the whole New Adult genre. I like the cover and synopsis for 12 Rounds, I’m definitely going to read this one soon 🙂

I can identify with this genre, since I am way older than high school. Plus the characters are (usually) more mature in this genre.

Love all the New New Adult books. I reason I love these books so much is because they are about people my age in situations I can relate to. High school was a long time ago! The stakes are definitely higher.

This book sounds so steamy and sexy! I cannot wait to read it. Everyone likes a bad boy with a good girl! The book cover is extremely appealing and reminds me of the Down to You Cover. I love New Adult Books because the are steamier, sexier, deal with darker content, but also are about new beginnings and discovery, independence, and looking to the future!

I haven’t read any of the New Adult books yet (at least, I don’t think I have!) but I’ll probably be reading Easy next. I like the idea of this genre because, as I’ve seen many people say, though I love YA books, I also love adult books (it still sounds like porn to me whenever I say that!) and sometimes I just want a bit more from YA, so this is perfect.

I love that New Adult books give us that ‘something more’ that YA books don’t! And I absolutely love the blurb for 12 Rounds. It sounds amazing! And the cover is gorgeous 🙂

I have only read a few New Adults, but I like that it can go a little further than YA.

This is actually the first time I have heard the phrase New Adult.

I feel like New YA is much more complex and pushes the boundries. YA wil never be able to do the things that New YA is able to do.

I love the New Adult “genre”. Recently I read lots of NA books, and they were all amazing. I like that the books are a little bit more mature than the young adult books, and mostly the setting is at college instead of high school. I can’t wait to read 12 Rounds! Seams like a great read!

I always loved YA books but I am SO GLAD that there is now a New Adult genre for more mature audiences. Sometimes there is a big difference between ages 15 and 18 and sometimes I just want to read more mature topics.
12 Rounds looks AMAZING. I love the synopsis and it sounds like a great read!

I’m not sure what I like yet because I haven’t read enough, but I do think they all sound AMAZING! Thanks for the giveaway.

Wow, this sounds great!!! I love YA but I sometimes feel like it lacks the heat I want. I love seeing boundries pushed and I love the darker tones in novels and I love that heat which is why I always bounce back and forth between YA and adult romance. I’m happy to see this gap being bridged and I cannot wait to check out some of these New Adult books!!!

I’m loving the new adult genre because it heats things up a little more and gives a more adult take on relationships. YA is great for that first love type but new adult is my new favorite! I hope to see more soon!

Great guest post. The New Adult genre is quickly becoming my favorite. I will definitely be getting this book.
