Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter on goodreads:

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I’d tell my sister no.
I’d never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I’d zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I’d hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I’d tell them I love them.
I wish… Yeah, I wish.

Gena Showalter, a name many of associate with hot steamy adult paranormal romance, but Gena also writes YA paranormal stories and … they are as good! I love her Twisted series and when I heard she’s working on another YA series I was hooked and couldn’t wait for it to come out.

Truth to be told, I was never a fan of Zombie stories, never cared about them. But, being such a big fan of Gena, I knew I could not refuse to read Alice in Zombieland, just because there are Zombies. And Oh boy I am glad! This story is just as deliciously awesome as I expected. Full of action and romance Gena wove a tale that will suck everyone in its spell and once you finished the last page you will be desperately awaiting the next book.

Alice – determined, strong awesome with a hind of snark

I absolutely adore Alice. She’s a phenomenal heroine and exactly how I love them to be. Sadly, already in the beginning Alice lost her whole family and it nearly broke her and us with her. Actually, normally I expected to be pushed into the story after this horrible accident happened. But no, we first see Alice happy with her family and cute little sister only to loose them soon after. With the story already that emotional at the beginning, I was hooked after the first few pages. Alice’s spirit was nearly broken, but Alice is strong and she’s determined and I simply admired her for her strength!

Another wonderfully awesome aspect of Alice is: she doesn’t take crap from anyone. Even though she’s sad and grieving her strong spirit never left this wonderful girl. There is Cole who is used to everyone being either scared of him, looking up to him and obey him. But, not so our Alice! It’s not in her nature to bow down and it’s not in her nature to take the shit he’s trying to force on her!

Cole – oh hot steamy and thrilling boy

I had high hopes for his character, knowing Gena would create a hot mess of a boy for Alice and us. Oh Boy did she deliver! Cole is a natural leader; the perfect image of a bad boy with all this tattoos scars and constantly bruised. When Alice meets him for the first time they are drawn to each other, something neither of them fully understands. And, it confuses them and this confusion turns into anger at least for Cole. But, he hasn’t met Alice yet – she doesn’t bow down and retract from him. She can stand her own, something Cole isn’t used to, but fascinates him just the more.

Of course, there is more to Cole than the bad boy image he projects on the outside. But, either way, he’s hot strong, sexy, possessive or he has a heart! I love Cole, oh yes I love this boy! Easily, Cole will be one of my favorite sexy book boyfriends easily together with Kaidan and Galen.

Bad-assery, kick-assery and snarkery in a tale full of action and romance

I love Alice strength, which carried the whole story arc effortlessly. I loved her snark, strong retorts and her wish to do something good; to change the world she is forced to live in. Besides that, there are some amazing secondary characters that we easily put into our hearts just as easily. The bunch of Cole’s bad boy friends among them, but mostly Alice’s new best friend Kate! She was awesometastic!! This first book in the series focuses on establishing the world for us, explaining the rules about the Zombies and introducing the story for us. This first book closes perfectly, answering enough answers to satisfy us for now, but leaving enough mysteries and secrets to leave us wanting for more!

Bewitched Rating

Bottom Line

Alice in Zombieland comes with a brilliant, kick-ass cast of characters and waves an action packed story with just the perfect amount for steamy romance to satisfy all our needs! Alice is an admirable heroine – strong, determined, wonderfully awesome and a perfect match for bad boy Cole who will steal not only Alice heart!

  1. *gasp* Not a fan of zombies? *faints dramatically* Well I’m happy that you enjoyed this one. It was very tame when it came to the zombies so I can see why. I loved Alice’s snarky attitude and Cole’s…. personality haha. I loved the humor in this one, too! Even teh chapter titles = awesomeness! 😀 Great review Danny!!

Yours is one of the few positive reviews I’ve seen of this book. Most people didn’t like it. I’m glad to see that someone did! I was looking forward to it, but after reading SPLINTERED by A.G. Howard, I’m not sure how I can read another YA Alice-inspired book and enjoy it. I think she ruined Alice for me (in a good way). 🙂
