It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a book featuring second-chance romance or a secret baby, and Back in the Texan’s Bed by Naima Simone has both. Three years earlier, chef Charlotte Jarrett and oil heir Ross Edmond have a secret romance. Tired of being kept a secret since a relationship between the staff and the golden son would be a no-no in the eyes of Ross’s strict and domineering father, Charlotte breaks it off and moves from Texas to California–only to find that she is pregnant with Ross’ child.

When Ross has dinner at the new restaurant in town, he asks to meet the chef and to his surprise, Charlotte is back in town. His feelings for her haven’t dissipated and neither has his attraction. They both harbor feelings of resentment and abandonment from each other and their own families. When he finds that she has a child–one that looks like he did as a child–Ross is desperate to be in his son’s life. They decide to co-parent under one roof, and Charlotte’s hard feelings thaw when she sees Ross with their son. Now that Ross is getting a first chance at being a father, could Ross and Charlotte get a second chance at the relationship they never got to really fulfill?

This is book one in the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Heir Apparent series. I got the feeling at times that there was more to a few of the character’s stories, but many things were explained to get you up to speed. The main characters in Ross and Charlotte were quite different and well-developed, and the side characters had depth as well. The thorn in both Charlotte and Ross’ sides is a real piece of work, and I truly hated his despicable actions throughout.

I give Back in the Texan’s Bed a four out of five. Full of romance, feel-good moments that arise from some serious tension, and a with a villain that hits too close to home for Ross, I enjoyed reading their journey. It’s hard to make a second-chance romance work, especially when you throw in the secret baby trope, but these two themes meld quite nicely under Naima Simone’s hands. The story flowed nicely throughout, but it ended a bit abruptly. I would have liked to see more from Ross and Charlotte together as they navigate their new relationship.

About Naima Simone

USA Today Bestselling author Naima Simone’s love of romance was first stirred by Johanna Lindsey and Nora Roberts years ago. Well not that many. She is only eighteen…ish. Published since 2009, she spends her days writing sizzling romances with heart, a touch of humor and snark. She is wife to Superman–or his non-Kryptonian equivalent–and mother to the most awesome kids ever. They live in perfect, sometimes domestically-challenged bliss in the southern US.
