The prodigal Cahill is back—and ready to confess
Tucker Cahill disappeared from Gilt Edge, Montana, hoping to escape a secret that has haunted him for nineteen years. Then, when a young woman’s remains are found in the creek near his family’s ranch, he has no choice but to face his demons. The truth that sent him running years ago could take away his freedom now.
Kate Rothschild came to town looking for vengeance—and Tucker Cahill. What she finds is a tortured and irresistible man who’s more than meets the eye. Caught up in the past, they are drawn deeper into a twisted game that’s not over yet. And the consequences could prove fatal for them both…
“B.J. Daniels is at the top of her game…the perfect blend of hot romance and thrilling suspense.” -New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan
“In her Cahill Ranch series, Daniels has created an intriguing setting and a cast of characters that prompt reader loyalty.” -RT Book Reviews on Outlaw’s Honor
I’ve really enjoyed reading a wider variety of books these past months, but one thing that a lot of them have in common is an intriguing mystery that hooks the reader in and takes them for a ride. Hero’s Return is no exception with a fantastic mystery, and there’s a lot of suspense as well in this fourth installment of the Montana Cahills series. Tucker Cahill disappeared 19 years ago. Everyone is left wondering where he went, but no one has heard from him. When word comes that skeletal remains have been found near a creek close to their ranch, Tucker finally makes his way home to face his guilt head on–and his possible punishment. Kate Rothschild is on the hunt for the woman who drove her brother to commit suicide years ago, and Tucker just might be the key to finding out what happened all those years ago, as well as getting a little vengeance if possible. Can these two very different people join forces to learn the truth, or will their journey be too dangerous to complete?
Tucker is a genuinely nice guy that was by a woman when he was only 18. He’s still gun shy in the romance department, but Kate’s fiery determination, independence, and will to find the truth burrows under his skin. Their scenes together were fizzing with electricity and attraction, even though they tried hard to deny their feelings for each other. Tucker’s past was explored in detail, and Kate’s current family life as the daughter of a Montana State Representative was revealed piece by piece, making this read that much more enjoyable since I was able to connect with both of these characters.
And the side characters really added so much to Hero’s Return. Tucker’s sheriff brother was very no-nonsense but a little lenient, even though he wanted to do things by the book. Tucker’s sister and other brothers, along with a few significant others added a nice dimension. I wanted to know more about them than was revealed. There are a few mysteries to be solved within, and the twists and turns weren’t entirely predictable–which I really liked.
I give Hero’s Return a four out of five. I found the relationship between Tucker and Kate to come on a bit quickly since the book covers a pretty short time period, but their romance takes a back burner to the main mystery anyway. Even though this is the fourth installment, I had not read the earlier books and I didn’t have any problem figuring out who was who or what had gone on in the past. B.J. Daniels did a great job of sprinkling in enough back story to figure everything out quickly without going into too many details from the past books. Well plotted with nice pacing, I really enjoyed following the clues to Tucker’s past that lead to some very twisted villains. I highly recommend Hero’s Return to mystery and suspense lovers of all ages.

I like when an author sprinkles in enough backstory that I can pick up a later book in a series and quickly get a feel for how things stand. It’s super helpful. Thanks for being a part of the tour!
