The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.
Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.
Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.
When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . .
Well, who could walk away from such an adorable and super cute cover? And from such a very promising story? .. I couldn’t and jumped at a chance to read this perfect summer read!
When you lose what makes you special.. who are you then?
Elyse is from the Caribbean and together with her twin sisters she used to be an amazing singer. When an accident takes her voice, Elyse is lost – so lost, that she decides to spend the summer with her aunt in a Oregon seaside town. Here, she will have to face that she won’t ever be again who she was and now has to find a new perspective of life.
The Elyse we get to know after the accident – is quite .. and not just because she lost her voice, her whole demeanour is quite and soft, which is in complete contrast to a sassy, outspoken, singer full of temperament!
A notorious playboy that will become a silent hero!
As much as this is Elyse’s story – Christian is my silent hero in this story! Christian is the classic playboy – flirting with every skirt, never taking any flirt serious enough, but somehow, right from the beginning he’s different with Elyse. He seems to feel what she needs and is just always there for her, supports her healing without any fuzz and big words. He’s a wonderful boy! Of course, he also challenges her – but he never pushed her to far! And.. his love for is kid brother was simply adorable!

Bottom Line
The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler was a soft beautiful story about loss and healing and finding out who you are even though you have lost everything that you thought would make you who you are! It has a wonderful soft pace and has remarkable and unique characters!
This is the perfect summer read that comes with lots of feels and some great characters! Any summer read recommendations for me? When the sun comes out, I just love to read books that play on the beach…
