Young Adult paranormal is still my favorite genre. As much as I do love Contemporary , paranormal stories still catch me the most! Also, Stacey O’Neale is definitely a voice many Book Bloggers knew before she published her own book, so I was eagerly excited to read a book from her, but also dig into this new paranormal world full of “Elementals”.
Plus, look at the covers – aren’t they amazing?? I absolutely adore them – plus, I read already the Pre-quel Shadow Prince and I am hooked!!! Totally hooked! (you can download the Pre-Quel for free at amazon! )
So Stacey shares today an Interview with us, where she answers lots of questions I know you guys are dying to know! Also, don’t miss the Giveaway at the end of this post!
Interview with Stacey O’Neale
- Who or what inspires your writing?
Life inspires me. I’ve gotten ideas while walking down the street, talking to a friend, watching television, etc. It can come from anywhere at any time. The idea for the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT series actually came when I was researching for another book.
- Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?
I read reviews of THE SHADOW PRINCE. I couldn’t help it. This was my first published work and I was dying to hear what readers thought. I was lucky thoughโmost of the reviews were really favorable. The first time I read a bad review I laughed. It was really funny. I don’t get upset when people don’t like my books because everyone has different tastes. I’m just happy the books are being read. J
- How much of the characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?
I get asked A LOT if Rowan is a real person in my life. Most of my characters are based on pieces of several different people. It’s small facets of their personalities taken up several notches, and then smashed together to make one character.
- Do you find it hard to kill off your characters?
No. I think each writer knows when it’s time for a character to die. I know readers don’t like that, but we have to be true to the story. However, I want you to know it does gut me sometimes to do it. I really don’t look forward to it.
- Can you share a teaser of MORTAL ENCHANTMENT with our readers?
The best teaser is the prequel novella, THE SHADOW PRINCE. It’s FREE on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Also, the first chapter of MORTAL ENCHANTMENT is at the end of the novella.
- What scene was your favorite to write in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT?
Chapter Twenty. I had that scene in my head even before I knew how the book would end. It’s very swoon-worthy. I think readers will enjoy it. J
- What was the hardest scene to write in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT?
It’s difficult to answer this without giving anything away. I will say there’s a scene where a character thinks they are about to uncover something big, but it ends up crashing and burning in their face. It was tough to write because the character feels completely responsible.
- Who is your literary hero?
I’m a massive Gena Showalter fan. I’ve read most of her books. I like that she shifts between adult and young adult. I would like to do the same thing. I have fun writing YA, but I also love adult paranormal.
- What do you normally like to read when not writing?
On the YA side, I read a TON of paranormal, urban fantasy, and science fiction. When I’m reading adult, I like contemporary, fantasy, and paranormal. Please don’t ask me for a favorite because I donโt think I can choose just one. ๐
- Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Read a lot. Write a lot. You can’t have one without the other. It sounds simple, but it’s really true. Also, quit making excuses. If you want to be a writer, be one. If you really want it, make the effort. Oh, and never give up!

I would choose to control fire because it fits my temper. I get angry easily and having the element of fire would help get the anger out.

I’m a little nervous about the character death question – I like for all the characters to escape unscathed even though I know that’s not entirely realistic. I’m really, really hoping her main characters aren’t marked for death at any point in this series though! I’m super excited to give this book a try, Rowan is calling to me:)

I can imagine it’d be nearly impossible not to read reviews of your first book. Even the negative ones. But bravo to you for taking it like it’s supposed to be taken — as one person’s opinion and that not every book is for everyone.

I’d like to control water. That way I get find a way to get much needed water to areas in drought. Of course I’d have to figure out a way to desalinate salt water, but it’d be pretty cool.
