As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help.
Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.
Lately, all I hear is that Paranormal is dead and everyone just wants to read Contemporary. Sure, I do love Contemporary, but I also love Paranormal stories rather fiercely. So, I was actually super excited to pick up Chameleon which comes with an exciting paranormal promise!
Refreshing Paranormal Elements
One of the things that drew me into this story was definitely the unique paranormal element. Dani discovers that supernatural creatures exits, that she’s also something very unique and that her best friend also is supernatural. That’s a lot to take! It becomes even more complicated when she is kidnapped and find herself now surrounded by magic and ancient dangerous prophecies. Yep, that’s a lot to take it. I actually really liked the world Kelly Oram created here, it has definitely some unique elements that I found myself excited to discover more.
Brilliant writing, a fresh voice and outstanding characters…
…are definitely the heart of Chameleon. Kelly Orams writing makes the story flow effortless and her style is definitely something which is both fresh, unique, witty and smart. In addition her characters are fabulous and most definitely stood out. Especially Dani’s snarky and witty attitude was something I especially loved.
However, I do love her best friend Russ the most! Girls! Watch out, because he’s one of those boy who can steal your heart without you even realizing. He has a lot of attitude and arrogance, but he’s also a wonderful and incredible friend for Dani. And especially those two together were just an explosive witty team!
Romance… hm!…
Here is when it becomes difficult. As much as I loved the story and the writing and the characters for above reasons, I had major problems with the romance. Oh and there is romance – a lot!
See, there is this Love Triangle (yep, there is… one..) and it made my heart ache So much! Plus, I just didn’t get Dani’s decisions at all. I didn’t feel the chemistry between those who ended up together and I was also a little mad as I didn’t get it. Also, I didn’t feel like it had much to do with free will and more with circumstances and expectations… You have to read this book so that this part makes sense for you, but as I do not want to spoil you, that’s what I can say…
So the romance gave me some headache and I just couldn’t get it, which eventually ruined the excitement a little about this book. On the other hand strong emotions are what makes a book stand out and it most definitely evokes a hell of a lot of feelings!
Bewitched Rating
It was a definite torn between 3 and 4 mainly because of the confusing feelings I had towards the romance. But. the story, the writing and the characters were absolutely amazing!!
Bottom Line
Chameleon by Kelly Oram was a brilliantly written paranormal take with an refreshing paranormal angle. Vivid and outstanding characters that do not shy away from lots of attitude and witty banter made Chameleon to a true page turner! Even though it massively evokes some heavy emotions, I had some problems connectionw ith Dani’s choices especially in the love departement.

This sounds like an excellent read! I’m always looking for something fresh in the paranormal/supernatural element. I’m not TOO worried about the romance section being a bit off unless it derails the whole book, but since you said the writing is smooth, I think I will add this to my TBR! Thank you for such a great review!

I love paranormal as well, but romances that are awful (I’m looking at you, Demon Trapper’s Daughter) can ruin a book or series for me. I think I’ll take a pass with this one!

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to
