When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? But before she can consider the question, she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.

For the first time, New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr has applied her extraordinary talent to contemporary realism. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa’s fans, and every YA reader, will find its wild ride enthralling.

Review:

My first thought when I read the synopsis was that it was very similar to Stephen King’s The Dead Zone.  This made me unhappy because, I loved Stephen King’s book and didn’t think it could be retold in a better way.  Also, I’m used to fresh, new stories from Melissa Marr, stories I can not just consume rapidly because they’re so compelling but stories that are so different they leave me mulling them over for months to come.  But I had faith in Ms. Marr that this wouldn’t be a knock off (she’s way too good for that) and my faith was proven right!

Despite the distinctly supernatural power that Eva develops, this book reads WAY more like a mystery/thriller than a paranormal fantasy book.  And for me, it all came down to the characters.  Melissa Marr does an outstanding job of drawing the reader into the characters, both Eva and the killer in particular, with alternating POVs that give just enough hints here and just enough hints there to keep the reader guessing what comes next.  I loved the way Eva’s visions would shift as she influenced the world around her.  I loved the power that gave her, to control her own destiny and make her more than just fate’s pawn.  I also loved the way Eva wasn’t the standard misunderstood, shy girl heroine.  She’s the IT girl, she knows it, but she also knows she’s more than that, even before her power comes along.  Still, she develops a strength of character over the book that makes her even more interesting.  Eva’s definitely one of the best YA girls I’ve read in a long time.

And the killler?  This is one seriously mess up individual!  And as we get more insight into the killers mind and past…well let me just say, this person has some whacked-out family drama.  SERIOUSLY.  I don’t want to say anymore because I SOOOO enjoyed every insight I gained into the killer’s mind.  It’s some fascinating stuff!

Of course, there’s a romance.  Melissa’s ability to blend relationships into the most difficult of circumstances is yet another one of her traits as an author that make all of her books must reads for me.  And Nate’s a hottie.  Sizzling, hot hottie.  Again, I won’t spoil it.  Read the book.  It’s SOOOO worth it!

Bottom line:

Fascinating, thrilling and so gripping you’ll find yourself reading it when you should be doing other things (*cough*working*cough*child-care*cough*), this book needs to skip the top of your TBR pile and find it’s way immediately into your hands!

Rating 5+

  5. Definitely found myself reading this one when I should have been sleeping ;). The romance, the killer, and Grace were my favorite parts. I do like Eva was the IT girl, but wasn’t vilified for it. Can’t stand when the popular girl is portrayed as an evil bitch for no other reason than her social status.
