There are only two indie authors I can’t wait to read their next books, even after I enjoyed their first magical book many years ago. J.L. Bryan has the supernatural market cornered for me, and when it comes to crime mysteries, it’s A.J. Lape all the way. The sixth installment of the Darcy Walker Investigations is out today, and I devoured this one. This book seemed to fly by with all the action, the crime, and the absolute protective beast that is Darcy’s boyfriend Dylan. In Heist & Seek, Darcy has yet to return to duty since she has to be cleared by a therapist after the events in the previous book. She’s temporarily assigned to work a campus 911 call center, and her first call involves a smash-and-grab robbery in the fancy part of Los Angeles. She can’t just sit there and do nothing, so she abandons her post and heads straight for the robbery.
Darcy’s trademark wit, bravery, and penchant for going head-first into danger are front and center as usual. While she’s earned the respect of the cops and detectives she’s worked with, plenty of people on the force think she’s only gotten where she is so fast because the Captain is her boyfriend’s grandfather. Her wonderful and weird network of informants never fails to amuse and amaze me. I definitely look forward to seeing how they each play their part in helping Darcy solve the crime.
Darcy’s relationship with college football star Dylan is still going strong, and I love how he’ll drop everything to surprise her with a quick trip across the country to spend some time with her. He has some deeply held rage when it comes to anyone threatening Darcy, and this book gives him the opportunity to take care of some business with her enemies. And along the way, he gets to call in some of her most powerful allies to get the job done.
I give Heist & Seek a five out of five. All of her connections are becoming uncomfortably acquainted with each other, and she’s not sure what that means for these relationships and who is still on her side. I love the fast-paced writing and especially Darcy’s zero filter mouth. My only qualm is that I have to wait another year for the next installment, and I’ve already preordered it on Amazon. Thrilling, smart, exciting, and definitely a fantastically enjoyable book and series to read.
