Hi Shirley – Thank you so much for stopping at the Bookworms today! In The Bride Wore Chocolate Candace is about to get married when she meets the delicious Michael, so let’s talk a little about wedding, Candace and food!
If you could marry at any place in the world, which places would be your favorite places to marry? ( I have mine, it’s on a beautiful island in Malaysia – If I wouldn’t be married already, I would definitely marry there! )
Thank you for having me! I would totally get married on an island myself. A private island—for sure. We live near Clearwater Beach and the other weekend I saw FIVE weddings on the beach—amid all the sunbathers and street performers. If I was going to have a beach wedding, I wouldn’t want to hold it beside the chubby guy getting a tan in his Speedo 😉
From all the things that can go wrong during a wedding, what would be the worst for you?
For me, if the ceremony fell apart, that would be the worst. My reception had all kinds of disaster moments that we laughed off, but the ceremony is, after all, the important part, and I’d hate to see something happen during those precious moments. Although my veil did catch on fire during the ceremony (note to self: lift the veil before blowing out the unity candle) but I managed to blow it out before it became a huge issue 😉
Candace obviously loves chocolate; do you have a favorite when it comes to chocolate, and what is Candace’s favorite chocolate?
My favorite chocolate? I don’t think I could pick one! I definitely love milk chocolate. I’m not a fan of dark chocolate. Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are my go-to favorite when I’m having a bad day, for sure, but I’ll take about any kind of chocolate 😉
Candace’s favorite is Hershey Kisses. They’re quick and easy to eat, you can stash them in your pocket, and when they’re such little bites, it’s easy to discount the calories!

Certainly! I make these cookies all the time!
Rebecca’s Chuck-the-Guilt Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nuts
1 twelve-ounce package of to-die-for semisweet chocolate chips
Set the oven to 375 degrees. Take out some of the day’s stress by beating together the butter, sugars, vanilla, and eggs. Don’t even think about how your time could be better spent cooking dinner, cleaning toilets or walking the dog—these cookies are designed to erase guilt, not add to the total. Quick, before anyone comes in and catches you making cookies, stir in the flour, baking soda and salt. Add the nuts.
Hold a tiny moment of silence before adding the sacred chocolate chips. Ignore your own advice about salmonella poisoning and taste the raw dough. If the kids come in, lie your brains out and tell them it’s a new kind of broccoli casserole. These are your cookies. You worked hard for them.
Drop by huge spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for ten minutes. Inhale deeply while allowing the cookies to cool (be sure all spouses, children and anyone else of cookie-eating age is upwind). Then gorge on as many as it takes to erase any guilty feelings you might be having. Hide in the bathroom and lock the door if you need privacy for your guilt-fest.
Remember: feeling guilty burns enough calories to cancel out the cookies.
Cooking also plays a big role in your life, what would your husband says is your best recipe?
My husband loves pretty much everything I cook, and he’s not a picky eater, thank goodness. He loves my Eggs Benedict (which is so decadent, we rarely eat it) and the brined and roasted turkey I make every Thanksgiving.
From all the books you wrote and published which one is your favorite? (If you are able to pick just one…)
It’s like picking a favorite child! I always say the current one (THE SWEETHEART RULES), because that’s the one that I just wrote and has the warmest memories in my heart. Plus, it has a Coast Guard hero—what’s not to love about a man in uniform!
