A British nanny looking for a low-key summer finds buried secrets, murderous attention, and unexpected romance when she visits the Nantucket Sound.
The Nantucket Sound is a beachfront playground for the privileged and elite, where the sunny days are filled with scenic bike rides, backyard picnics, and bonfire parties. But all Ren Kingston—a visiting Brit still reeling from heartbreak—really wants is a quiet summer as a nanny for one of Nantucket’s wealthy families.
Getting acquainted with handsome Jeremy and his young group of trust fund, private school kids was not part of the plan. Neither was befriending the local bad boy whose reputation is more dangerous than charming. After a dead body is found next to The Sound’s postcard-perfect view, Ren starts to wonder where the real threat lies. Because it’s becoming clear that her newfound “friends” are much more than they seem. They’re hiding secrets. Secrets that Ren wants no part of. But once The Sound has you in its current, it won’t want to let you go…
Having not read Hunting Lila, even though I heard so many wonderful things about it, I was especially eager for The Sound. Also, since The Sound has been already out in the UK and people were super excited about it, I was thrilled to dig into this story!
Beautiful Setting filled with a wonderful heroine, driven by a thrilling Mystery.
Even though I’ve never been there, I love stories that are set in Nantucket, and I truly want to visit one day. It perfectly delivers a romantic feeling, with usually stories set there are during summer time where flirts are always many! Sara Alderson couldn’t pick a more perfect setting, with all those rich kids that always add a little excitement and extravagance. Moreover, with Ren our wonderful british heroine and the a killer mystery to solve, the setting is just about a perfect combination, of creepy and wonderment.
A beautiful Romance with a perfectly brooding boy
I loved Ren, but what I loved more was all the little relationships she formed during her time in Nantucket and more specifically with Jesse! Red makes fast friends among the rich kids, yet it’s somehow difficult for her to truly fit in. She feels more drawn to Jesse, the dark mysterious boy who rents her a bike, yet has been avoided by the rich kids. But Ren doesn’t listen to all the rumours and rather loves to make up her own mind, even thought it was sometimes a little hard for her to stay true to her own inner voice. But, this struggle also made her even more genuine.
Nevertheless I fell hard for Jesse the more we got to know him. There is a horrific backstory to Jesse and while we slowly begin to understand, we are left with many emotions that are truly heartbreaking.
Their romance was slow, but cute and with an undeniable chemistry!
Killers, Murders and some Mysteries!
The salt in this story was definitely the mystery surrounding Jesse, a killer and the rich kids who also seem to hide something. Surly, The Sound is never boring and there is a lot that will make you gasp, and a lot of twist you won’t see coming.( and some you might see coming..). The Sound was definitely just as simple contemporary romance but offered so much more and truly ended up in a very enchanting story!
Bewitched Rating
Bottom Line
The Sound by Sarah Alderson was a wonderfully rich story with thrilling mysteries, starling twist and an enchanting romance. Driven by a charming heroine, The Sound easily glues to the Reader to the pages and does not let go until the very last page! The perfect summer read, I can recommend to everyone who loves romance with a little thrill!

First, I just love that dress she’s wearing!! It is so interesting! This sounds like a great story, I love stories set in Nantucket too! It seems like the ultimate beach place for the summer! I haven’t heard of this one at all. I will have to look for it though. I do like mysteries with my romance sometimes. I don’t get a lot of murder mysteries with my romance in YA contemps. I’m just now starting to see it. So I will definitely look for this one. And of course you like the Bad Boy! That is always your favorite character, lol!!

I haven’t had much luck with this author’s previous books before for some reason, but this one I most definitely want to try. I love murder mysteries that also have a romance, so I think I’m going to like this one very much. Jesse sounds like hottie!
Great review, Danny!
