Bad Taste in Boys

Book I in the Kate Grable series
Genre: YA, Horror/SciFi/Science/Zombies
Published July 12th 2011 by Delacorte Press
synopsis from goodreads
Rating:
Someone’s been a very bad zombie.
Kate Grable is horrified to find out that the football coach has given the team steroids. Worse yet, the steroids are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe–not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate! She’s got to find an antidote–before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town  . . . and stay hormonally human.
What drew me into this book was this delicious cover! So cute! Then Carrie Harris is insanely funny on Twitter and I hoped her book would be as awesome as she is. I admit that zombies are truly not my favorite genre. There is just something about zombies that is so not appealing to me. However, I hoped that it would be more on he funny side in Bad Taste In Boys and I was so not disappointed!

Kate the most adorable geeky heroine ever

I loved Kate, our protagonist, instantly! She is so adorably geeky. Kate is an absolute Science Geek, science is her life and she’s perfectly fine with it. There is no need for her to risk it to be on of the It-Girls. She’s just Kate; smart, funny and in love with science! I loved how content she was with herself and that she didn’t feel this intense urge to change herself. I loved her sense of snarky humor and her comments and retorts made me smile so often!

A zombie-like-mystery to discover for Kate

We are thrown right into the plot and together with Kate we have to face that there is something seriously wrong in town. Of course, Kate jumps right into this and wants to discover what’s going on with the boys in her school! The zombie scenes were something gross but this simply is part of the genre. The story itself was very fast paced and we follow Kate on her path to discover the truth when there is no one from the adults she can truly trust! Kate morphs during this path from a lab science girl to a kick butt heroine and I loved this transformation. But, don’t get me wrong – Kate stayed just Kate, she’s just such a strong girl who grows with what is thrown at her!

Hilarious – a true comedy with a sweet and cute romance

Truly the best part was the humor. This story was comedic genius and had me laughing throughout!! I was smiling at my Kindle while reading  it and I was so rooting for Kate the whole time. But in the midst of all the funny, a sweet romance that unfolds before our eyes. I totally underestimated Aaron and the romance completely surprised me. But it was cute, sweet and utterly adorable!

Bewitched Rating

Bottom Line

Carrie Harris delivered exactly what I was hoping for! A great story that will make you both fall and cheer for the characters and most of all will plaster a smile on your face!!  Kate is the most adorable geeky heroine ever!!!!  I can’t wait to read more geeky awesomeness from her!

Additional Notes: You should visit Carrie Harris’s website, it’s one of the best and most awesome author websites ever!  And seriously consider following her on Twitter .  She’s awesomely funny and she always has the funniest contests! I was excited to find out she’s writing another book with my favorite geek Kate: Bad Hair Day. And although the cover is not as strong as the first one, I’m still  dying to get my hands on it and spend some hours laughing and cheering for Kate!
Much love my friends and a good start to the week!

  1. Awwwww, I want to bond with sweet & geeky & adorable Kate ASAP — she sounds like my kind of girl! 😉 And I love the idea of throwing a science girl into a story with zombies out to get everyone! This book must be crazy fun with gross zombie parts and other scenes that will make you smile like crazy, and the best part for me is always being able to root for the snarky heroine!

Awesome review, Danny! I just added this one to my TBR pile now! 😉

Oh absolutely and if you love this kind of heroines you must meet Kate!!! I loved her so freaking much, she was funny, cute and so smart!! I can’t wait to read more of her and I hope the next one is as good as this one.

The Zombie scenes were really gross sometimes but it didn’t bother me so much since all the rest was so awesome:)

  2. Zombies scare me Danny. Not gonna lie. I don’t deal well with them at all which is why I’ve held off reading this book, however, I do love a geeky hero or heroine, so I think I would enjoy Kate! One of these days I’m going to suck it up and read a zombie book. I just know it:) Fabulous review sweets!

*raises hands* me too Sweetie. I am not a fan of Zombies which is why I was so reluctant to pick it up. BUT, this one is soo awesome you have to read it. It’s fast cute, adorable and oh sooo funny!! Full of snark and awesomeness!

Plus, I think there are other supernatural beings in the next book. I heard something about werewolves? But everything with a touch of science behind.

Really, forget about the Zombies here and just meet Kate!

  8. Great Review!! Even though it’s zombies you make me want to read this one! I skipped over it because of the zombie thing. I’m right there with you on the genre. But if I can have some fun with it, then I might enjoy it. I might give this one a second look! Thanks Danny, cause you know, I’m hurting for something to read! LOL!

Plus the next book in the series is not about Zombies anymore so you wanna meet Kate now and follow her Geeky Awesomness!
