[box type=”shadow”]Aria is a teenager in the enclosed city of Reverie. Like all Dwellers, she spends her time with friends in virtual environments, called Realms, accessed through an eyepiece called a Smarteye. Aria enjoys the Realms and the easy life in Reverie. When she is forced out of the pod for a crime she did not commit, she believes her death is imminent. The outside world is known as The Death Shop, with danger in every direction.

As an Outsider, Perry has always known hunger, vicious predators, and violent energy storms from the swirling electrified atmosphere called the Aether. A bit of an outcast even among his hunting tribe, Perry withstands these daily tests with his exceptional abilities, as he is gifted with powerful senses that enable him to scent danger, food and even human emotions.

They come together reluctantly, for Aria must depend on Perry, whom she considers a barbarian, to help her get back to Reverie, while Perry needs Aria to help unravel the mystery of his beloved nephew’s abduction by the Dwellers. Together they embark on a journey challenged as much by their prejudices as by encounters with cannibals and wolves. But to their surprise, Aria and Perry forge an unlikely love – one that will forever change the fate of all who live UNDER THE NEVER SKY.[/box]

I believe all of you know this feeling when you read a book, finish it , but the story stays with you … and doesn’t let go of you. This is what happened with me with Under The Never Sky. Although I finished reading it while I was in vacations in November, my head is still  with Aria and Perry…. And, I’m sure won’t be able to do this book justice with my review.. *sigh*

Incredible Worldbuilding – Mix Dystopian with SciFi and Fanatsy?!

Seriously, there is no way to just label this book with only one of those above. It definitely has elements from all of them. We start with being in a “typical” SciFI world, where Aria our Girl MC lives. The world she lives is is only based on living in Realms. Nothing is “real” anymore for people like Aria. Even smell and taste is not real. But this is the only reality she knows.

Then, there is Perry the other main character who lives in the Outside – where is not much technologie and people have to fight to survive. There comes the Dystopian part of the Story. But, there is more to the people that live outside and, without wanting to spoil anything for you, there comes the Fantasy Part. The Outside people like Perry have special abilities – and without spoiling too much, they feel very fantasy like which I loved very much!

Also, the description of the world was fantastic and phenomenal. But what I liked most was the description of the sky and that Aria even mentioned the title of the book, I loved this so very much. Often a title of a book is hard to grab, yet here it’s wonderfully woven into the story!

Story Telling in alternating POV’s

Often I’m frustrated when a story is told from different perspective, yet here it was not only necessary to get to know Aria’s world and Perry’s world better, it was also very captivating and turned the story in an incredible page Turner. Both voices felt genuine and so different that is was fun to be in both heads. Mrs. Rossi was able to deliver both a true girl who’s innocent and naive and a boy who is used to live in a cruel world. I loved them both!

But apart from the Main Characters Perry and Aria which I loved so much, there are also secondary characters that were awesome! They complete our Main Characters and I wish to learn more about them! Especially Roary the best friend of Perry!

Instant Love and Soul Mate? Oh no, not here!!!

That was one aspect of the story that I loved most. There was no instant “I see you for the first time and I know you are my soulmate”. Nope, they didn’t even like each other, yet they had to stick together on their journey – which was no fun for both of them. Each of them from a different world yet here together. It was wonderful to see those two grew on each other and how they developed first a certain respect for the other and then … Yes… then!

Bottom Line

Incredible fascinating world building where genres are mixed in a mesmerizing way, paired with wonderful charismatic, brave and strong Characters turnes Under The Never Sky to a true Page Turner that I believe will be one of the best Debut’s 2012. Perry was to fall for, Aria was to cheer for and the love story was sweet, brave and honest. I loved every word of this book and I can’t wait for more….

I know I didn’t tell much about the story, but do yourself a favor and just read it and dive into the story without knowing too much!

Random Notes and Additional Info: This is the first time I saw this, but there is a special Enhanced Kindle Version available with Audio and Video enhancement specially for iPad and KindleFire’s. I most definitely have to check this out, but it does seem very interesting so I though I’d share 🙂 Oh and the best thing, you don’t need to wait! The book has been released last week! Wooot!

  1. Annette

I reviewed this today, and raved about it too. I also found it hard to talk about the plot too much — didn't want to give anything away, but loved the characters, world building, and of course, the romance. Great review!

Thank You Annette! I really didn't want to spoil anything since I loved getting into the whole world unprepared and without knowing too much!

YES!!!! I was so very, very in love with how their relationship progressed and with the fact that at no point was there another boy present to compete for Aria's affections. It was just her and Perry and their beautifully told story. So glad you loved this one as much as I did Danny:)

Yeah for NO Love Triangel and I was so in love with how we actually followed them while slowly falling for each other. You could actually feel it.. it was wonderful and one of the awesome parts of this book!

This was really one of the best books I read lately… In fact, I could read it again, right now!

  5. I really liked this one and some elements I really loved. Like Aria and Perry's relationship and how it progressed was perfect. And I thought the world building was great, I just had a bit of hard time cause part of me needs to know where and when we are. I did LOVE the fantasy elements though! And the ending felt rushed for me which kind of ruined my warm fuzzy feeling I had going on. I am SUPER anxious for the next one though!

Their relationshop was one of the best aspects of this book apart from the very unique worldbuilding with those mixed genres! But, I see what you mean – it was really no way to know where and when we are although it didn't bothered me so much.
I have very high hopes for the next one!

  6. Danny,
I absolutely agree with your whole review, even the feeling that you don't feel you can review it and do it justice. That's how I feel. My review posts on Thursday. You did an awesome job with the review!! You captured the tone and the greatness of it perfectly!

Ha, I just read your review and I'm so glad you loved it as much as I did! And I really felt a little sad after writing my review, there was so much I wanted to tell but couldn't because I really think one should experience the book without any more spoilers. But thanks hon!

I have read so many great reviews on this book. It was a toss up between this and Cinder, I went with Cinder, which I liked a lot but now I am wondering if this one is better. I will be reading this very soon!

Cinder has to be so awesome!! Pushy just listened to the audio and was raving about it :-)) But, since you read it you have to give Under The Never Sky a chance now- it is sooo freaking awesome!

  9. *sigh* I LOVE that feeling when a book lingers with you. I am loving this new trend of combining different genres. A dystopian sci-fi fantasy sounds awesome.

So, so so happy to hear there is no insta-love in sight! Heather from Buried in Books' review sold me on the romance and your review underscores what she said there. I think I'm really going to like this! 🙂
