This week I read Jennifer Snow’s A LOT LIKE FOREVER, the third installment in the Blue Moon Bay series. I do enjoy contemporary romances set in small towns, and my first experience with a Jennifer Snow novel was entertaining. A LOT LIKE FOREVER features an engaged couple that has been together for seven years but have yet to set a date, mainly because workaholic Whitney Carlisle can’t find the time to do any of the usual wedding things. Her fiancé Trent Connolly supports Whitney but is hitting his limit with her not committing to them actually getting married.
Whitney is hiding a very large secret from everyone, one that is life shattering if ignored too long. And as things get worse she starts pushing Trent away more and more. While Trent is baffled as to why she’s so distant lately, their friends are equally clueless. The fact that Whitney can’t confide in the love of her life, especially when he’s her biggest supporter, is a red flag to me. Most of the novel could have been resolved very quickly if she’d just open up and be honest to the man who wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
The novel flashes back and forth between the present and seven years earlier when they first started dating. I liked seeing them both when their relationship was exciting and new. Whitney was very likable during those flashbacks, and she’s very fixated on work and scared in the present which makes her a bit unrelatable to me. Trent was always loving, fun, supportive, and very loyal throughout those years, and he was a great character to get to know.
I give A Lot Like Forever a 3.5 out of five. While I enjoyed this book overall, the main conflict of Whitney being afraid to face the truth of her dire situation and tell everyone was just a bit too much for me. The writing was fantastic and the pacing was great, but the ending felt very rushed. Trent’s obstacle came very late in the book and wasn’t as fleshed out as I’d have liked. The setting was very charming and picturesque. There were several things that we were left hanging with at the end, but I’m assuming that will be a future book. The epilogue made me happy to see how everyone was doing about a year in the future.
