When Tara Peary’s twin sister Sophie goes missing, Tara dives into New York’s underbelly to find her. Sophie is the one person who’s ever truly understood her, and Tara knows her sister isn’t the only one who needs help.

Tara is also on the run emotionally from her complicated childhood. Her memories are threatening to overwhelm her emotions and derail the hunt for Sophie. A psychotherapist keeps her afloat, but when Tara begins dating her therapist’s young tech-millionaire neighbor, she risks losing the only lifelines she has left.

The more Tara uncovers about her sister’s disappearance and the dark side of the rich elite, the less certain of the truth she becomes. As Tara reaches the center of the mystery, spanning from her childhood home in Georgia to a Southern California beach, she has to decide whether the truth is a price she’s willing to pay.

Just like my previous book review of Holly Bourne’s Pretending, Leslie Archer’s psychological suspense novel Until We Are Lost deals with heavy subject matters in rape, PTSD, and mental health. Tara Peary has a twin sister that has been missing for months. While Tara’s search for her sister leads her to New York City, she keeps herself busy counselling at risk youth at a foundation that helps kids who have the same kind of unstable and traumatizing past that Tara and Sophie had. But their combined pasts catch up with them quickly, and no one is safe from the memories or the seedy underbelly of New York and LA.

In New York, Tara has been seeing a new psychiatrist, and this woman’s family is breeched by Tara in unexpected and dangerous ways. But while their traumatic past with their parents still haunts them, new danger is found as Tara retraces Sophie’s steps in the months that she was missing. Tara is meek, timid, and keeps to herself while twin Sophie is brazen, on the hunt for men, and outspoken. Sophie has always protected Tara, and without her twin in her life, Tara struggles to live a life with meaning or happiness–especially since she can’t remember the six months after her father died in a fire.

I give Until We Are Lost a four out of five. While the first parts were predictable, the suspense was built in surprising ways while Tara searches for her sister and builds a new life for herself. I really enjoyed this dark and twisted novel, and Tara was written with a realness, a grittiness that is hard to forget. Told in the points of view of Tara and Sophie, the author does a fantastic job of filling in all the disturbing blanks throughout their tumultuous lives. A definite read for psychological suspense lovers.
