I love a good dominant man. Part of it’s the idea of someone who can hold his own, surveying a room with a natural sense of control—but it’s also the essence of safety built in. I like the concept of someone who can control a scene, aware of limits and yet able to push them, guiding all parties involved into an experience that’s sure to rock everyone’s world.
At the same time, though, I don’t respond well to several of the hardcore dominants that I’ve read. I’ve never been a fan in real life, and this personal preference has certainly transferred over to my reading habits. This doesn’t mean I like my dominant characters to be all squishy soft on the inside, but I do like a character who can be playful and in-control, one who can flirt with an easy sweetness as easily as he can captivate his heroine to succumb to his every demand.
This is why I had so much fun creating clever, charming Dean Sova. He’s the romantic interest to heroine Maya Clery in The Assignment, and I’d like to tell you a little about him today. At 39, Dean has been a player for the better part of the last decade, and has a bit of a mysterious edge to him due to some circumstances in his past. He’s also loved toying with BDSM in occasional, random experiences, but he’s never really had the opportunity to give it a true go. He’s playful at heart, and he definitely likes to explore—and when he meets Maya at their mutual friends’ Memorial Day barbecue, he’s inspired to do so with her as much as she is with him.
Being that Dean’s BDSM interest centers largely around rope, he had to get his inclination somewhere. His fascination arose after an adolescence spent helping out on boats and docks in the small waterfront town of Rock Hall, Maryland, where he met Niko Witte, a man thirty years his senior. Niko was Dean’s mentor in many things: a love of the sea, the practice of architecture…and even those kinky interests (which you’ll find out more of not only in The Assignment, but throughout the entire Lessons in Control series). From Niko, Dean learned responsibility, discipline (the motivated kind!), and aspiration. These traits carried on in his life once he took over an architectural firm, something that he—having been raised on the edge of poverty—never could have imagined for his future.
Now that he’s settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean has built a solid life for himself. He has a magnificent home in Half Moon Bay that he built with Niko’s help, located on a coastal bluff with a glorious view of a lighthouse as well as the beautiful, rolling bay waves just beyond. He’s rather known in the area thanks to his successful San Francisco-based firm, Sova Associates, and is called upon to build luxury homes and complexes all over the area. He’s close with his three younger brothers, who have also made the Bay Area home, and the youngest even interns at his firm. And while Dean’s grown comfortable and had a good time connecting with a bevy of women over the years, it’s not until crossing paths with Maya Clery that he discovers he’s found the perfect match for his dominant, playful charm, one whom he can see not only hooking up with, but getting to know far better. Maya is sassy and independent, and quite capable of holding her own in the most direct of conversations—of which they share many.
I don’t think it will come as a surprise when I say I adore my male lead, Dean Sova. He’s got his life together, he’s smart, and he has the fun flirtation I love mixed in with a good dosing of natural dominance. It doesn’t hurt that he’s tall, part Croatian, and sporting a rich tan due to all of his sailing, with a five o’clock shadow and a pair of slate-gray eyes to boot. And did I mention the husky, low voice? Yeah. That. Just the right sound for instructing Maya in all the ways that he does…
I hope you are as tickled by Dean in The Assignment as I was while writing him. Considering I had just a glimpse of his whole self before I began, it was fantastic to watch him develop even further through the course of the book, and later on, throughout the entire Lessons in Control series.
