I went to a meeting not long ago and got asked the question I know most people want to ask when they meet me, even though most don’t. “Why do you put BDSM in your novels?” asked one of the aspiring writers in the group. And then… “And how do you know about all that kinky stuff anyways?”

If you’ve read my Heroes at the Brink erotic romance series, you know why she asked. The two novels that comprise the series, At the Brink and my latest, To the Edge, come with a heavy side of kink. In fact, To the Edge is the sexiest, kinkiest, most explicit erotic romance I’ve written yet. It’s the second chance love story of Noah Blake and Clara Luz, who reconnect after years of lies and regret have kept them apart. The premise goes something like this: In order to learn about kink, Clara had to learn the ropes, but she never expected to be so compromised she’d need rescue by none other than Noah Blake, the first man she ever loved, the ex-SEAL who almost destroyed her, the wounded warrior determined to reclaim her heart and fight for redemption to the very edge of sexual obsession.

Clara is a perfectly good Catholic girl, the daughter of a senator. Clara never gave kink a second thought, that is, until she begins to look for an escape from a life controlled and stifled by her ambitious mother. To Clara, exploring the forbidden, daring convention, and stepping out of her comfort zone are simultaneous acts of rebellion, self-discovery and empowerment. The instant Clara steps into her sub role, she’s claiming her freedom. The moment she seduces Noah into becoming her Dom marks the beginning of her emotional journey toward acceptance, resilience and independence.

Clara is the perfect example of why some people gravitate to BDSM or choose to experiment with their sexual lives. She’s strong and always in control, but kink is the only way she can let go, relax, and do something she’s never been able to do before: trust another human being, fully and completely, the only man she’s ever loved

I meet many women that feel a lot like Clara. Modern life heaps a pile of demands on the evolved version of us. Perhaps because of these huge demands, the concepts of total trust, being taken care of, protected, cherished and deeply desired are weaved so deeply into our romance fantasies. I can’t change my readers’ realities, but I can try to lighten the burden with sexy, authentic, adventuresome and profoundly hot reads. At the end of the day, I write to indulge my reader’s fantasies, their deepest, darkest desires, the longings and emotions that perhaps we don’t talk about or acknowledge in public, the secrets we keep in our Kindles.

So why do I put BDSM in my novels? Not for the fad of it. Fads come and go. Not for the shock value of it either. BDSM is no longer shocking to the average romance reader and anyone—this author included—can learn and research every single element of it without ever stepping into the proverbial dungeon.

Instead, I use BDSM in my novels as the ultimate element of contrast, as the canvas against which we can paint scenes that are far more conventional and yet much more damaging and destructive to the self than an honest exploration of the forbidden and the unknown.  I also use elements of BDSM to expand my author’s palette adding variety, creativity, complexity and innovation to my scenes. After all, variety is the spice of life.

Perhaps most importantly, I put BDSM in my novels because my readers love it and they tell me so. Ultimately, a novel is a vicarious journey we take along with the characters we love. My readers are not all into BDSM, but they enjoy a read that takes them to the far, unexpected and exotic reaches of the erotic world.

To learn about kink, she had to learn the ropes. Yet she never expected to be so compromised she’d need rescuing. And by him. The first man she’d ever loved. The former navy SEAL who’d broken her heart.

Clara’s gone wild.

Naked. Cuffed. Caged. Is this the sweet senator’s daughter I left behind?

I didn’t know it was her when I rushed into that room filled with flames, but I’ll never let her go again.

She’s proposed a unique way to thank me. It could bring us both to the edge of ecstasy—or to the point of no return.

Clara wants to submit. To me. Totally. Damn any limits. The very thought of it has brought me back from the dead.

But a stranger is watching from the shadows. He’s made us his fantasy. And he plays rougher than I do. Where he’s taking us now is somewhere so dark, and so dangerous, that this time it could be inescapable.
