Interview with Piper J. Drake

Q: Let’s start right away with our hero Gabriel, why do you think readers will fall for Gabriel?

Gabriel is a hot, strong, no-nonsense kind of guy. He also has an awkward side he’ll admit to, especially when it comes to trying to interact with people on a day to day basis. And he’s the first person to call himself out when he makes a mistake. What’s not to love? 😉

Q: How would you describe Gabriel. Is he the typical alpha male hero, or the brooding type or how would you best scrub him for the readers that haven’t met him yet?

Definitely the Alpha male hero with a history. But he learns from his past and his mistakes along the way.

Q: Which character came first for you, Gabriel or Maylin and how did you go on creating a pair that will eventually fall for each other?

Gabriel came clear to me first. And I wanted the challenge of writing a heroine who wasn’t kick-ass herself, but had her own brand of strength—the kind of strength to hold together family units and make people feel like they had a home to come back to. Maylin grew through the story and Gabriel grew with her.

Q: Piper, you recently spend time on a cruise and gave some workshops on writing .How exciting, I wish I would have been on this cruise! How was is to give a workshop on a cruise, where everyone is on a holiday, did it create a special atmosphere?

It did! Specifically, I led creative writing discussion during an actual excursion out to snorkel at a barrier reef and swim with stingrays. Gathering my group together at the beginning while we were waiting to load up on the bus took a strong set of lungs.

I had a couple of “food for thought” questions prepared for those on the excursion and they took off from there. It really made the excursion a lot of fun because we were all sharing ideas and adding to the discussions as we interacted with the stingrays and came back on the bought from snorkeling. It’s an incredible experience made exponentially more mind-blowing interacting and engaging creative minds. I was honored to lead the excursion.

Q: On this cruise you were with some of your author colleagues. Did you spend a lot of time (outside of the workshops) together and had inspiring talks about writing? That is at least what everyone would think when such great authors are all about to spend so much time together 🙂

Several of the lead authors had specific locations where they could be found outside of workshop times. They also were spread out across dinner tables so different students could enjoy dinner with them each night. There was a sort of “home base” where some could post where they’d be writing on board the ship at any given time. A colored Post-It note system was employed to let people know if you were open to chat or deep in writing and requesting not to be disturbed. Overall, it worked out very well.

I spent a lot of time chatting here and there with writers in every phase of their careers. It was eye-opening and inspiring. I came away with a lot of ideas and some great new friends. Hopefully, I also paid it forward a bit. I made sure to make myself available to answer questions any time someone had questions for me.

Q: Hidden Impact is the first in the Safeguard Series, can you share some little tidbits about who will be the next hero in the next book?

Isabelle “Lizzy” Scott, the sniper in the original fire team from HIDDEN IMPACT, will be the heroine of the next book, DEADLY TESTIMONY. With the launch of the Safeguard division, she’s called to provide personal protection for Kyle Yeun, a Korean-American business man under witness protection.

Lizzy will be coordinating with Federal Marshals and police, but she’ll still have her hands full with Kyle. Hijinx will occur. There will be a body count.

There will also be a goldfish. I’m pretty sure his name is Frederick.

He’s not the hero she’s looking for

As part of the elite Centurion Corporation team, military-veteran-turned-mercenary Gabriel Diaz is a natural defender. He’ll do anything to ensure a mission is successful. Anything but get emotionally invested—he learned the hard way that can be deadly. Easy bodyguard jobs in between the more challenging missions are all he’s interested in now.

Maylin Cheng is desperate and running out of time. Her younger sister has gone missing but no one seems to take her concern seriously. Her last hope lies in asking an aloof bodyguard for help. He dismisses her outright, but all that changes when she is almost killed in a not-so-accidental hit-and-run right before his eyes.

As Maylin leans on Gabriel, she begins to rely on him for more than just her safety. But as their attraction grows, so does the danger surrounding them. When the elaborate web they’re trapped in unravels, Gabriel will do anything to protect them. Even if that means putting his heart in the crosshairs.
