Happy Friday my Friends and today I’d like to tell you my Five Reasons why I think you should read or would enjoy Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein
It’s about Jinnies!!!! A Paranormal, or supernatural species that is underrepresented in the YA literatures, yet there is so much room for great stories! My favorite so far is most definitely Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrious and then The Fire Wish, so of course – Becoming Jinn was high on my to-be read list!
It’s a cute, upbeat story! I really liked the tone, the temperament of the story. Asra is still so young, just turned 16, which also means that she will become a Jinn over night. But, Asra never wanted to be one and now has to deal with her new looks (super gorgeous over night) and her new powers!
It’s about wishes! Well, of course it is – we all (well, we think we know!) that if you capture a Jinn you have 3 wishes! Of course, it’s not like that in reality ( …and by that I mean in Becoming Jinn). Here you have one wish and you cannot even name the wish yourself, the Jinnie which is assigned to you looks deep into your soul and then tries to fulfil your deepest wish! I really liked this take on the wish mythology!
It’s not just about wishes, but also about family and friendship! Asra was always an outsider, among her Jinnie friends and her human friends. She never really fit in – or, so she thought! It was more that she herself was not really willing to get close to anyone after having lost her best childhood friend. But, with her becoming a Jinn she realized that she needs friends and slowly starts to open up!
It’s about romance, and when friendship can become more!
In all honesty, I really need some romance in order to fully enjoy a story. And of course, we have some romance here, especially with Asra becoming so über gorgeous over night. But, I really liked that the boys that are interested in her, were also interested in the Before-Jinn Asra. I just would have wished for stronger feelings, you know the butterflies and such….. (and the Love Triangle was also not helping much..)
Bottom Line
Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein was a great, cute story and I am absolutely certain many people will love this story. I just didn’t completely connect with Asra as a character and I wasn’t always on board with her decisions. Maybe she was just to young for me… What I really loved was the take on wishes and how these Jinnies grant our deepest wishes, those we might not even know about!
Love the Jinnie Trend? I just love the idea that someone would be there granting my wishes:)

I’ve seen this one around a lot lately and it does sounds pretty good. I love stories about genies/jinn so I think this could definitely be one for me 🙂 Nice list!

I have seen a few reviews of Becoming Jinn and I think it sounds good. I agree with you in when am reading a book I need some sort of element of romance.
