I’m pretty thrilled to host a wonderful author today to celebrate her newest release Famous In Love , which I already reviewed (and LOVED) last week! So, when I got the chance to be on the Blog Tour, I was so excited, because I knew immediately what I wanted to talk about with Rebecca! She’s a huge fan of Love Triangles, and of course it also plays a big role in Famous In Love and then there are all these people that hate Love Triangles – so THIS is what I wanted to talk to her about!

and.. Rebecca wrote a fantastic post about Love Triangles, which makes so so much sense and also will resonate with those who are always wary about them!

Give Love Triangles a Chance

Hey guys! Rebecca Serle here, author of the upcoming series FAMOUS IN LOVE. Fiction meets reality when Paige Townsen, a totally normal girl-next-door, is plucked from obscurity to star in the next major film franchise based on a book. When she relocates from her hometown of Portland to Maui (as in, Hawaii!) to film the movie, she falls for the two lead actors she meets on set: Rainer Devon, and Jordan Wilder.

Now I know love triangles get some flack nowadays: some people say they are too predictable; others insist that falling for two guys at once would never happen. Critics of the love triangle sometimes talk about “instalove:” this idea that two people can’t just fall for one another at first sight. And maybe they are right…I mean, we always KNEW Bella would end up with Edward in the end, right? But here’s a little secret I’ve learned about the love triangle in YA lit:

It isn’t really about the end points, it’s about the space in the middle.

The love triangle is a metaphor for something greater: it’s about putting the main character in a position of power, and really giving them a choice to make. The two guys in the love triangle are always so different, right? There’s a reason for that!

Each guy represents something about the main character and the quest she is on to discover herself. Yes, while “hella good hair” (to quote Taylor Swift) and sexy smiles are certainly fun to write and read, what’s more fun is watching the character decide between two extremes: the two versions of herself that she could be. By exploring relationships and feelings for both guys, the heroine of the story is really learning about herself. Because let’s get real: while things may end up happily ever after in YA, most of these characters are in their teens! Who knows who they will be– and who they will be with– when they turn 20, 24, or 30.

But the happily ever after isn’t the point: the love triangle is the road map a character takes towards being happy with herself, and with the choices she makes.

So give them a chance! Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in “instalove” with Paige, Rainer and Jordan…just like I did. 😉

Dear Rebecca: Thank you so much for this fabulous post! I’m always a little wary of Love Triangles but your post makes so much sense, and YES we always knew Bella would end up with Edward. (How could she NOT) But then, I must say that I was very very surprised by the ending of Famous in Love! Totally didn’t see that coming!
