Danny’s Re-Reading Adventures with Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Posted 25 September, 2014 by Danny in Blog, Danny, Discussion, I'm Obsessed With... / 20 Comments

We all have these books that just mean so much to us, these books that we love so much that we wish we could just re-read them all over again and again. Sure enough, there are not so many books or series that fall into this category for me, so these books have to be special.

Re-Reading Books… just when?

And then, there is also the time. As a Book Blogger my pile of books to read often seems endless. SO many books that come out and that I am super excited to read leave often no room for Re-Reading Adventures. Not sure if it’s just me, but sometimes I feel like I can’t take this time to just leave some review copies be and go back to read books I just want to read.

But… then, I also think, as a passionate reader this is something I also owe to myself. To take my time and re-read books just because I want it so badly!

OUTLANDER – Oh How I Love Thee

So it happened two weeks ago when I watched OUTLANDER the TV series for the first time, and Oh Guys! The Show is AMAZING!

Outlander-TV_series-2014

….and ever since I watched the first episode, I felt this deperate wish to go back and read these book! I fought this urge – but then… I gave up and took out my books!n

YEAH ME!

I read the first book Outlander back in the 90s and hoy cow, I was so in love with Jamie and Claire and read these super huge books so quickly! I was waiting desperately for new releases and actually screamed over each cliffhanger! The first 4 books I read at least 4 times, and before a new book came out, I reread them all over again.

And I remember the feeling of complete adoration and undying love I felt for Claire and Jamie and I wanted this feeling back!

Now, I’m already at book 3 and yes I am again feeling the big love! It#s also the first time I am reading it in english. Back in the 90s I only ever read books in German as my english was rudimentary, so I am quite excited re-reading my favorite series now in english!

So here is my letter to Jamie and Claire

Dear Claire,

You do not know me, nor will you ever get to know me  but I know you two so very very well!

Claire, I followed your confusing journey through the stones and how you slowly but steadily fell in love with this one extraordinary Highlander Jamie. And.. I fell in love with him right with you. Oh don’t worry, I know Jamie only loves you! I admire your courage, I love your witt and your smart head, I love how you abandon the luxuriates of modern life to life with the love of your life! Seriously Claire, no hot showers and baths?

Your love story is the epitome of romance and undying love that makes women’s hearts melt!

And … of course, we all want our own Highlander with a kilt, a sword and who loves us just as much as Jamie does and who is as devoted to us as Jamie is.

*swoons a little*

You both went to hell and back and it was your companionship and love that always brought you back!

And what Jamie had to endure nearly broke me and brings me to tears anytime I think about it!  (I hope you root in hell Jack Randall !)

Claire, from the bottom of my heart – Thank you so so much for sharing your epic journey and your incredible moving love story with us. And thanks for hearing Jamie just a little!

Your ever devoted fan,

Danny

Quotes

“Don’t be afraid. There’s the two of us now.” – Jamie Fraser  in Outlander

“You are safe,” he said firmly. “You have my name and my family, my clan, and if necessary, the protection of my body as well.” – Jamie Fraser  in Outlander

“Your face is my heart Sassenach, and the love of you is my soul” – Jamie Fraser  in Drums of Autmn

“You are my courage, as I am your conscience,” he whispered. “You are my heart—and I your compassion. We are neither of us whole, alone. Do ye not know that, Sassenach?” –  Jamie Fraser  in Drums of Autmn

“When the day shall come that we do part,” he said softly, and turned to look at me, “if my last words are not ‘I love you’-ye’ll ken it was because I didna have time.” – Jamie Fraser  in Fiery Cross

Are you a fan of the OUTLANDER series too? Did you read the books??? I must admit that I love the first 4 books and then I lost a little the excitement as the focus shifted away from Claire and Jamie and moved to their daughter.

Are you watching the TV series? I LOVE IT!!  and if you watch the TV series – did you already see this weeks episode “The Wedding”?

  2. I feel the re-read agony every day, Danny. I love my review books, but gosh – sometimes I really just want to go back and re-experience a first love, you know? Finding the time and assuaging the guilt are the challenges.

I too have read the first four books in the Outlander series about 5 times each. This is the series that brought back my love of reading after a hormone hiatus (high school + boys = no time to read), so it holds a very special place in my heart. I’ve seen all 7 episodes of the TV show that are out so far, and am so in love with seeing this story come to life. I think I swoon every time Jamie is on screen. 🙂

Ah Krista, isn’t it horrible every once in a while? I’m rereading now Outlander and I feel a little guilty as they are so huge and I still have so many books I “have” to read… but right now I am just enjoying my Jamie Time!

Gosh, did you see THE WEDDING!? Wasn’t it damn perfect??? They did such a fantastic job with this series and I’m so heartbroken we have to wait until APRIL!

Great post, Danny! I am a huge Outlander fan, but I admit I haven’t reads the latest book yet. I’ve been tempted to reread them, but like you, I have a huge to-read list. I did read a few of my favorite passages of Outlander the other night. 🙂

Haha Anna, honestly I also haven’t read the last 2 books… Somehow Brianna didn’t do it for me, but now that I am rereading it I feel differently connected to the books and also to Brianna and I think I will now also read the last 2 books! Woot!

  4. I’m LOVING the whole Outlander TV series! The Wedding episode was so fabulous. It’s rare we get to see two people fall in love like that. Usually it’s rushed so we can get on to the “good stuff”. To me, that IS the good stuff!! I’ve only read the first book but plan to read more after this. 🙂

  5. I love this post! I’m a huge fan of the Outlander series and I wish I had time to re-read the books. For me Jamie and Claire is one of the most romantic stories ever! I love the Starz show! I was lucky to meet the cast and get an autograph when I saw them at Comic Con San Diego! Sam is hot and the perfect Jamie. Here is my recap of Comic Con San Diego if you want to see the Outlander cast pictures – http://mynookbooksnmore.com/2014/08/comic-con-san-diego-2014-recap.html

out about this topic. You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue with
you (not that I personally will need to…HaHa). You certainly
put a brand new spin on a subject that’s been discussed for
    ages. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!

  8. I tried reading the first book and read about 400 pages of it before I gave up. The pace was just too slow for me and it bothered me and I asked another blogger if something was going to happen soon and she said that if I didn’t like it from the first 400 pages I wouldn’t find much more to like. So I gave up on it. I guess I may always go back to re-read it to try again but I have so many other books.
I’m glad you have this series though. I do this with the Harry Potter series so I understand a book obsession 🙂
    Happy reading!
