It will be similar like Goodreads, but better! Developed from someone who loves books so much that she created this idea. However, they need money for this, which is why they started a “kickstarter” project and need YOUR help!
But for now, Let Ashley tell you why LitRate will rock so badly and why she needs all our support!
5 LitRate Features That Will Rock Your World
Exclusive for Bewitched Bookworms from Ashley, Nose Graze
Have you heard of LitRate yet? LitRate is mine and my husband’s idea for an awesome new book review/cataloging site. It will be like Goodreads—but better! We’re working really hard to talk to book lovers and get a sense of what you want that Goodreads doesn’t have.
Today we’re going to share with you five ideas that were made by book lovers just like you! These ideas were presented to us during a #LitRate Twitter chat and we think they’re so awesome that we’re going to work super hard to incorporate them into the site.
1. Easier edition/format selection & customization
It’s really nice being able to select your specific edition of a book on Goodreads. But sometimes it can be inconvenient or annoying to look through all the editions until you finally find yours. And sometimes it’s the right edition but the wrong cover.
During the #LitRate Twitter chat on Sunday, we came up with a few possible solutions. None of this is set in stone, but so far we love the idea!
On LitRate, there will be one listing for each book, as opposted to separate listings for separate editions. When you decide to add a book to your shelf, you can choose the format from a dropdown and select your cover image. We might even be able to allow you to specify a “default format” so that “Kindle Edition” gets automatically selected for you every time. How cool would that be?
And since you’ll be able to customize your book covers, you can even mix and match if you want. Do you have the Kindle edition of a book but LOVE the look of the UK cover? Assign that to your book so that you see the pretty UK cover on your shelf every time.
2. Turn off recommendations or whitelist your friends
Some people love the recommendations feature on Goodreads, where you can recommend a book to a friend. Others hate it and never utilize it. But the problem is that there’s no way to turn this feature off! So even if you don’t use this system, you can still get bombarded with recommendations. (And there’s nothing worse than an author recommending their own book to you… yikes.)
We hope to have three choices for you on LitRate: allow recommendations from everyone, allow them from no one, or only allow them from certain friends. So if you have the feature turned off, you’ll never get those recommendations!
3. Choose between “pages” and “books” for your yearly challenge
One person brought up a terrific point during the #LitRate Twitter chat: there’s a huge difference between reading 30 picture books and reading 30 500-page novels. And yet, on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, they’re represented completely the same.
On LitRte, we want you to be able to set two different kinds of goals: to read a certain amount of books, or to read a certain amount of pages.
4. Archives for narrators, illustrators, and publishers
Have you ever wanted to easily see all the books published by one company? Or all the illustrations made by one cover artist? Or all the books narrated by one person? On LitRate you’ll be able to!
If you’ve ever seen or used the Ultimate Book Blogger Plugin you may have noticed that author names and publisher names are clickable. When you click them you get taken to an archive of all posts tagged with that author/publisher’s name. We plan on bringing this feature to LitRate! You’ll be able to easily view publisher, author, cover artist, and narrator archives.
5. A list of publishers & their imprints — is it possible?!
When you see the name of an imprint, sometimes it can be sooo annoying and difficult to find out who the parent publisher is. Sometimes a quick Google search will do the trick, but other times it’s a lot more difficult than that.
We’d love to maintain some kind of master publisher/imprint list on LitRate to make it even easier for you. This is no small task, but we’re hoping that the LitRate community can help us out with this one!

I am *dying* to see this project come to life! I’ve supported it, though I don’t have a lot to give at the moment…but I’m behind it 100%…there are many sites out there but they all seem to be lacking in big ways that I think that Ashley and her husband will be able to fill!

While I’m no staunch, obsessed lover of Goodreads, I definitely use it to reach out to readers and friends who love books. Plus I love finding new books to read. I was skeptical of this at first, thinking ‘Oh, great, yet another social media site’ but actually it seems pretty legit. I like smaller based social media companies sometimes because they actually respond in person and hear you, so I’m definitely going to support this effort.
What i like best is that they took feedback on twitter. Big props there.

Being an old(er) book blogger, I’ve seen so many book sites try and fail to get somewhere, so I’m trying not to get too excited about this but it does sound amazing. I have a couple of questions – Is it daunting, knowing that you’re not actually just going up against Goodreads, but Amazon? And will Litrate be a site that people have to pay for? Because if you’re struggling to get together $16k for that, how are you covering the costs of everything else, especially if you have a large number of people on it?

I’m a new subscriber and just came across this post! I’m in the very early stages of designing something similar, but with a selling aspect also. I’m not quite sure on the finer details of my idea yet but it seems that if I can get my idea off the ground then we’ll be competition 😉 I wish you the best with your project, it honestly does sound great!
