When a young sorceress is exiled to teach magic to a clan of assassins, she will find that secrets can be even deadlier than swords.

From the critically acclaimed Leah Cypess comes a dangerous and eerie fantasy about murder, shocking discoveries, and fiery star-crossed romance that readers of Cinda Williams Chima and Robin LaFevers won't be able to put down.

Ileni is losing her magic. And that means she's losing everything: her position as the rising star of her people, her purpose in life, and even the young man she loves. Sent to the assassins' cave, hidden deep within the mountains, she expects no one will ever hear from her again. The last two sorcerers sent died within weeks of each other. Accidents? Or something more sinister? As Ileni navigates the dangers—both natural and human—of the caves, she'll discover secrets that have been kept for decades.

And she'll find an ally in Sorin, the deadly young man who could be the assassins' next leader. With Sorin determined to protect her, sparks—magical and romantic—will fly. But will even he understand the choice she must make in the end?

I always wanted to read something from Leah Cypess and her series Mistwood is still high on my TBR pile. So when Death Sworn was announced, I knew I needed to read it

Fantasy, Magic and some Kickassery!

The premise of Death Sworn is simply compelling. There is magic, the promise of a romance (forbidden) and a girl who seems to be full of courage. Ileni once was one of the most talented sorceresses, so it hits her incredibly hard when she slowly loses her magical abilities. Having no real purpose anymore, she volunteers to train a bunch of assassins in a hidden cave. Just imagine yourself being surrounded by male killers with you being the only girl and on top of this, you are deep underground in a cave.

The story is filled with magic, mysteries and the setting is uniquely enchanting, mysterious and quite frankly, a little frightening too…

Kick Ass Even Without Magic! Go Ileni!

Ileni is kick ass for sure. Even if she’s loosing her magic and even if she trained all her life to rely on spells, she’s not being helpless. I loved this about her above all else. Someone else would break down, be sad and heartbroken, yet Ileni does not give up so easily. She was so brave going into this dangerous place surrounded by these deadly boys and for this I admire this girl so much!

Even though her life seems to be in danger, she does everything – no matter how (stupidly) dangerous – to solve the murder of the two teachers before her.

Sweet Romance and deadly Mysteries!

The mystery surrounding the sudden death of her processors takes on centre stage of the story. It’s on Ileni to discover the truth. Again, I have to mention her courage, since the situations she finds herself in are getting more dangerous by the minute.

Thankfully our heroine is not alone and she finds some unexpected love in this strange place. Assassin Sorin is tasked with protecting her and during this time they slowly get closer to each other. He had all the best potential to be an awesome, mysterious kick ass bad boy that we love so much, yet somehow he lacked a little depth for me and I failed to connect with him. I also found the chemistry between then a little lacking and had wished for more passion, considering the dire circumstances. The first part of the story was a little slow and I was happy to find the story take up pace towards the middle. The ending was amazing, shocking and definitely was one of my high points.

Bewitched Rating

Bottom Line

Death Sworn by Leah Cypess  is a compelling story with a spunky heroine that you will easily cheer for! Ileni rocks this story with her courage and determination to uncover century old mysteries! Death Sworn will appeal to fans of Young Adult Fantasy who appreciate the unique setting, love to uncover secrets and wish for some romance!

  1. YAY DANNY!!!! I really enjoyed this one too. It was dark (literally) and I just never really new who Ileni could trust which always makes things fun. I’m so glad you were a fan of her as well:) Of course, I wished for a little more romance like you as well, but I did like that Ileni didn’t totally lose herself to Sorin and the story didn’t become all about him.

On a side note, I hope you feel better. Love you!

  2. I’m a fan if Cinda Williams Chima, so if this Death Sworn is as compelling as the Seven Realms series (as the synopsis suggests) then I will definitely have to check out this book. Thank you for putting this on my radar!!!
