Super Six Favorite Books to Recommend to Others
At my work and in my group of friends, I’m known as the one to go to for book recommendations. All I have to do is ask them what genre they want to read, and I can usually search through my Goodreads list of read books if I don’t have something right off the top of my head. But we all have a few books that we love so much that we just have to tell everyone about them–no matter how long ago the book was published–that we think everyone should experience the joy of turning those pages. Here’s the six books that I tell people about most when they ask “What should I read next?”
Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits is one of those books that breaks your heart with such great story telling while letting you remember first love. The writing is emotionally raw and touching. Just reading this one book is great for those who like contemporary romances with a healthy dose of angst. Plus, there’s several more books to read in this series and they’re still coming out. Warm Bodies is the zombie book that I recommend to people who don’t normally read the genre. It’s not your normal zombie book, especially since it’s written from the point of view of an intelligent zombie. And there’s the bonus of an excellent movie adaptation to watch too. Gillian Flynn has been writing those deliciously dark thrillers that I love, but she really hit it out of the park with Gone Girl. Featuring two of the most unreliable narrators and despicable main characters that I’ve ever read, this missing wife mystery is a page turner. This one’s also being made into a movie that’s slated for release this October. (Goodreads / Amazon / My Review)
When someone wants something a little out of the ordinary, I always recommend Jenny Pox by J.L. Bryan. Featuring a teenaged girl who is isolated and teased because her touch can kill, it follows her as she discovers that she isn’t the only person in town who was born with strange abilities. This ones full of great writing, angsty teens, and nice horror. The kindle version is free and the audiobook was recently released from Audible. (Goodreads / Amazon / Heather and Pushy’s Review)
For my friends that enjoy young adult books that are smart, witty, and they don’t mind a strongly sarcastic main character, I recommend Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. With ghost hunter Cas’ journey to find the elusive ghost, this book is strong on sarcasm, supernatural references, and snark. It’s a definite win for most people. It doesn’t hurt that he falls in love with the person he least expects himself to, and it’s so great to read. (Goodreads / Amazon / Joint Bookworm Review)
I’ve recommend the Charley Davidson series to so many people since I discovered these books by participating in a read along with Danny. People who love private detective mysteries will enjoy these, and there’s also the paranormal romance side to draw you in too. Smart, witty, sarcastic, hard to guess mysteries, and hot romance–this books has it all. Plus there are four more books with several more still to come. I really enjoyed Gone Girl and Warm Bodies too. I recommend Gone Girl a lot to people – not so much Warm Bodies since I don’t know many people who are interested in that genre.

That’s why I recommend Warm Bodies to people, Tanya. It’s such an anomaly for that genre, that people who normally wouldn’t read it have really enjoyed it, in my experience. I haven’t had anyone read Gone Girl yet that hasn’t enjoyed it. But everyone didn’t like the ending.

I find myself recommending Gone Girl to everyone I meet, so glad that’s on your list. I’ve also recommended Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver to quite a few people, and no one’s been disappointed yet. They’re just such great books.

I’ve only read Pushing The Limits from this list. What is going ON with me?!
I can’t wait to watch the movie for Gone Girl (I have a Ben Affleck weakness). If I like it, I’m definitely checking out the book 😀

What’s wrong with you, Allie? LOL, too many books, too little time! Just like with all of us.
I totally can’t wait for the Gone Girl movie, and I’m so excited that Ben Affleck is in it too. Plus, I read that Gillian Flynn rewrote the last third for the movie’s screenplay so the ending will be different. I can’t wait to see what it’s like!

Love Pushing the Limits and First Grave on the Right! I haven’t read Warm Bodies but it’s one that I’ve had my eye on since I saw the movie preview 🙂

Warm Bodies is one of those rare things–both the book and the movie are really good. You should definitely make time to check them both out. The movie is a bit funnier than the book, but they’re both great!

I agree with you about GONE GIRL, but there are better books than that, that I’d recommend.
I’d recommend 11/22/63 by Stephen King, even for those who are not Stephen King fans. Thirty years ago I read everything he wrote but stopped because I was sick of supernatural horror. 11/22/63 is very long, and I loved ever y page. It’s the best time-travel book you ever read, and you’ll be very sorry to see it end.
Three more books I didn’t want to put down were NO SECOND CHANCE by Harlan Coben, GONE BABY GONE by Dennis Lehane, and THE CONVICTION by Robert Dugoni.

Loved Warm Bodies! I want to read Jenny Pox series, but haven’t been able to get it yet. And Jones’s adult series is on my wish list. 🙂 Happy Sunday.

You haven’t read those yet? Anna Dressed in Blood is only a two book series, Pushing the Limits is ongoing with three books out so far, and Jenny Pox is complete with four books. That should help you plan which one to read first, lol!

I’ve read Pushing the Limits and Warm Bodies.
I was actually inspired to read Warm Bodies when I saw the trailer for the movie. I wanted to see the movie, but I have an unwritten rule that says that I can never watch a movie/TV series based on a book without reading the novel first. The few exceptions to that rule are Julie and Julia and Howl’s Moving Castle (I think I was about 12 when I saw that movie, and I didn’t know that it was based on a book).
I was really surprised that I enjoyed both the novel and the movie because zombies just aren’t my thing. I may have developed a slight infatuation with Nicholas Hoult after seeing Warm Bodies 😉

I love when you find a book that is so amazing you have to tell everyone about it even if they don’t read in that genre, or read much at all.
I think you picked out some great books. I would have to say I would recommend Black Dagger Brotherhood, Perfect Chemistry, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, Kissed by an Angel, and so many more.
