Super Six Scene Stealing Side Characters!
You know those characters–the ones that pop up in a scene and instantly make you forget all about the main character because they are just so perfect or sassy or nasty. Sometimes they are so awesome they make you yearn for an entire book focused solely on their character!
Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia’s Caster Chronicles is one of my favorite series, and Link is such a sassy, musically talentless bright spot in these books. From a funny best friend to a powerful Incubus, Link’s character definitely changed over the course of four books. But he never let Ethan down, and he never let his infatuation for Lena’s cousin Ridley go. I’m so excited that Ridley and Link are getting their own set of books, and I’m eagerly awaiting their new adventures.
With the ability to make fire appear from within his body, Vlad (yes, that actual Vlad) has an impatient temper and an even funnier side to him that few get to see. But Cat grew to trust him quickly after his first appearance in book 3 of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, and Vlad even has his own trio of books now. Just don’t call him Vlad the Impaler or you’ll get to see just how violent and quick his temper actually is…
Jeanniene Frost really has a knack for writing side characters that are unforgettable. Ian Flannery was Bones’ mate from the get go when they were prisoners, and they’re still thick as thieves. But he’s arrogant, rude, and oh so enjoyable to read. Boy is he fierce!
When your main character is such a sassy bad ass Grim Reaper, you need to have someone of the opposite ilk to temper that, right? Not exactly so in Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. While Cookie is Charley Davidson’s assistant, she’s also the voice of reason, the more reasonable one, but she’s a bit boy crazy. Also she may be trying to mack on Charley’s uncle Ubie. Hilarious things happen when Cookie tries to go undercover…
Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood series is one of my favorite horror sets. Thomas is a loner, nerdy witch who isn’t afraid to walk on the dark side to help out Cas. His love for the popular girl Carmel might blind him at times, but he steps up to the plate more than once in an heroic fashion.
Eric Northman stole my heart from his first appearance in the Southern Vampire Mysteries books by Charlaine Harris. Book four, Dead to the World, really brought him from side character to main character in my book, along with a change of behavior when he had no idea who he was. He’s strong, confident, protective, snarky…I could go on.
I pretty much have a thing for snark and comedy. What kinds of side characters make you smile and draw your attention?

The only one on your list I’ve read is on my list too (Link!) This was a hard one at first, but once I got started, I realized just how many side characters really make the story.

I had to look back through my Goodreads list to come up with a few other than Link and the guys from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress Series. We read too much, it all kind of blurs together, LOL.

YES the blurring of books is the downside of reading so much. Thank goodness I started doing reviews, because sometimes I can’t remember exactly why I liked or disliked a book so much, haha.

You haven’t read any of these great series? You’re in for a treat if you do. Beautiful Creatures is a YA series of four books and the spin off series is about to start next year. The adult urban fantasy Night Huntress series has seven books with one more coming in the main series, plus there’s five excellent Night Huntress World spinoff books.
Darynda Jones’ adult urban fantasy Charley Davidson books are going strong. The fifth one just came out in July, and I think she’s just sold through book eight.
Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares is a young adult horror finished two book series. And of course, Charlaine Harris’ adult paranormal mystery series is complete at thirteen books.
Lots of books to choose from in the various genres up there.

I admittedly haven’t read any books on your list yet, but I do have a paperback of Beautiful Creatures that I’m planning to read soon, so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for Link – he seems like such an interesting character!

Link’s character starts out as the funny best friend, but he becomes such an integral part of these books that they wouldn’t be the same without him. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did! Happy reading 🙂

Yes! It was just announced a few weeks back. It’s featuring Link and Ridley. The first book is called Dangerous Creatures, and there’s a novella coming out later this year called Dangerous Dream.
I love Link and that was one of the biggest movie disappointments. He was barely even a character in the movie and he was fantastic in the book. I do need to finish that series at some point… Excellent list.

He really wasn’t in the movie all that much, and he certainly wasn’t all that funny. I totally agree. Definitely finish up the books. The spin off series comes out next year, and a novella is coming later this year.

I haven’t read any of these, but when my sister talks about the Beautiful Creature series, it’s mostly to gush about Link! She made me love him more than Ethan! And he was great in the film 😀

I totally agree with you about Vlad and Eric. Bones will always be my main squeeze in that series but when Vlad was in the picture, he surely had me swaying a bit. I loved the banter between Vlad and Kat and seriously, how can you not be entranced by Dracula? LOL. And Eric Northman? Aside from Sookie, Eric made that series for me. Without him I don’t think I would have loved those books as much as I did.

Totally agree with your list…well except for #4 that I haven’t read yet. For me Erik totally stole the series and lived for him to be on the page.
