Holly Black’s twist on vampirism, perhaps with more pathology than psychology, brings a fresh new look to the popular mythos of vampirism. I very much enjoyed the effort and thought that went into the world building Ms. Black created and how it was both familiar and fresh at the same time.
At it’s heart, this story is character driven. Tana and the people who enter and exit her orbit take center stage in this story. Her beautifully self destructive ex-boyfriend, and the vampire she saves, Gavirel interweave in her story beautifully. They’re such fascinating characters that I can’t wait to find out what happens next with them.
However as can be the case when there’s a complicated world to build, the world building can take some time. There were points where the narrative branches off into in depth world building that may take time but in my opinion is definitely worth it!
But for me, the best part was Gavirel! Â Holy SNITZLE was this boy tortured and HOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Â I can’t wait to see what comes next of him of Tana. Â *fans self*

I absolutely adored the narration of this book. Â Christine Lakin does a stellar job and if you’re at all inclined, this audiobook is a definite good choice!! Â Her ability to fully flesh out and bring these characters to life was superb!!! Â An amazingly well done job!!

I had fun with this book and might have even rated it 5 stars (which, admittedly, might’ve been one star too many, now that I think about it:P). I am not patient enough to listen to an audiobook – always wanted to and trust me, I tried many times, but I think I might have a bad case of ADHD when it comes to sitting and listening to someone read to me for hours.. xD
I am, however, very curious how Gavriel *sounds*. He reminded me a lot of Lestat from Vampire Chronicles, and so I’d love at least listen to a sample of this audiobook in the future!

Yay, I’m glad you liked it too! I really enjoyed the darker tone in this book, and the world-building as you mentioned was really done well. And of course Tana and Gavirel were amazing characters. I was curious, how was the audio version of the story?
