As Philadelphia’s premier image consultant, Allison Campbell helps others reinvent themselves, but her most successful transformation was her own after a scandal nearly ruined her. Now she moves in a world of powerful executives, wealthy, eccentric ex-wives and twisted ethics.

When Allison’s latest Main Line client, the fifteen-year-old Goth daughter of a White House hopeful, is accused of the ritualistic murder of a local divorce attorney, Allison fights to prove her client’s innocence when no one else will. But unraveling the truth brings specters from her own past. And in a place where image is everything, the ability to distinguish what’s real from the façade may be the only thing that keeps Allison alive.

Part of the Henery Press Mystery Series Collection, if you like one, you'll probably like them all! KILLER IMAGE is the first in the Allison Campbell mystery series.

My Thoughts:

Allison Campbell is the owner of First Impressions, an image consulting firm in Philadelphia. Her clients are mostly newly divorced women and business people with self-esteem issues or other things that are holding them back, and Allison prides herself on helping them both on the outside and the inside. But there’s one type of client that she won’t work with–children–and when a local Congressman and his wife approach her to work with their difficult fifteen year old daughter Maggie, Allison is very reluctant to accept their offer. The Congressman is not a nice man and wouldn’t be above using dirty tactics to get Allison to take  the job, but ultimately she accepts when she sees the pain the mother is in over how much their Goth daughter just doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere.

A divorce attorney is murdered in the ritzy section of town where most of Allison’s clients live, and the deceased has surprising links to her new client as well as Mia, her former mother-in-law/mentor. Allison’s smart and savvy assistant/business manager Vaughn warns her against digging into these connections as she follows her gut feeling that Maggie didn’t kill the attorney, but are his warnings only to keep his secrets hidden or to protect Allison from the danger that seems to be lurking around the corner?

Killer Image is a great debut novel full of unpredictable twists and turns, great pacing and a fully-developed heroine that isn’t cookie cutter or boring. Everyone seems to be keeping secrets that they are desperately trying to keep hidden, and even when faced with a murderer on the loose, they’d rather keep these things hidden than disclose what they know. Told in third person point of view, you get glimpses into most characters’ heads, so you really grow to know and care for Allison, Vaughn, Maggie, and the other secondary characters. Following the clues as image consultant Allison turned amateur detective along with Vaughn and an unexpected computer expert was very entertaining, and I can’t wait to see what they are up to in book two.

This side character was very unique and useful. I don’t know what to say about Vaughn’s secret without spoiling it. Killer Image is a great book, so definitely check it out, Kimba.
