Super 6 Books I Loved As A Kid!
Ah…School is starting and kids around the US (including mine) are heading back to school. And it got me to thinking about the books I loved most when I was younger. So, without further ado…here they are:
It’s a classic for a reason! This is one of the first books I remember my mom reading to me when I was a kid and I remember how we’d re-read it over and over and over again (Sorry, Momma!!). Talk about your gateway into high fantasy. Mr. Tolkien hooked me early.
Oh, The Secret Garden!! I SOOOO loved this book and of course (little princess that I was) I totally identified with Mary. Her flights of fancy and her behavior and her eventually maturing were so intriguing to me. And this book started off a LOOOONNNNGGG love of historical novels for me.
Another classic but one that was so NEW to me when I first read them. I remember being at a particularly tense part of one book and having to head down to the basement to move the laundry (my chore as a kid) and being SO freaked out by our dark basement stairs. So, yes, I’ve always been a wuss when it came to the “scary” books.
I have a vivid memory of picking this book out when I was at the book store with my mom, just falling in love with the artwork in this series’ covers. And so began a love affair with D&D and gaming and all the fantasy books that went with it.
Yes, in hindsight not the most high brow of books, but still I say a classic. I loved the Wakefield Twins! I wanted to BE the Wakefield Twins (especially Jessica, I mean HELLO! She had SOOO much more fun than sweet responsible Elizabeth!)! I gobbled these books up like the literary chocolate they were.
And of course, the inimitable classic from Madeleine L’Engle. The perfect entrée into science fiction. I loved how she didn’t dumb down the theoretical science in this book, but left it out there to leave kids thinking and dreaming. This is one of those books that brings back fond memories of reading curled up behind the curtains in our apartment on top of the radiator on a rainy Fall day. Heaven!

I absolutely loved Nancy Drew books. They were my favorite to read and to this day I love playing the video games. I haven’t read any of the books lately though, but it would be very interesting to see how the characters have all changed since then.

Oh, I loved the Nancy Drew series as a kid. Admittedly, I never read the Hobbit. Only the “gifted” kids in elementary school were allowed to read it, which upon reflection is just plain mean. Love your whole list!

Ooh, definitely Nancy Drew! And The Secret Garden. That was so one of my favorites. I also loved The Little Princess and One Hundred and One Dalmatians (the original, not the Disney version). Ah, nostalgia!

Some are hard to find like “Cubby Returns” and “The Wednesday Witch”. “Cubby Returns” was my grandfather’s book as a kid. I still have his copy. I did look on ebay and it was there. Those books have probably been out of print for quite a while. Hope you enjoy them!!

Ohh I recently saw the The Hobbit movie and they did a good job tranferring the story to the big screen. Still there’s nothing like the magic you feel about a story turning the pages yourself. And imagine reading it as a kid, everything seems grander and even more adventurous:)

One of my classmates when I was a kid was the niece of Tracy Hickman. He came to our English class in 6th grade and talked to us. It was very exciting even though it wasn’t my kind of book.
I gobbled up SVH books, although SV Twins have a bigger place in my heart.
I also love the 1993 Secret Garden movie – maybe more than the book.

I loved the Sweet Valley High books, it seemed so glamorous when I was young! 🙂 I also loved The Babysitters Club when I was younger, and the Little House on the Prairie series.

I haven’t heard of a couple of those books, but the first three I know well. If I had to narrow it down to six books…? Harry Potter #1, #2, The Box Car Kids, Goosebumps, Wizard of Oz, and Animorphs. I know a few of those are series, but any book from those series will work (I think that’s cheating).
