Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels

Supernatural eeriness meets Illuminati’s mystery and paired with a sweet Young Adult Romance! I admit, I am not very much into ghost stories and I usually stay far away from ghosts in YA – but when we meet ghosts as in my favorite TV show supernatural and when the author is Kami Garcia I know I have to read this book!

Suddenly Ghosts are real and you legacy?

When Kennedy’s mom dies mysteriously and two identical hot twins rescue you from death by ghost she finds herself suddenly on the run.  Thrown together with 4 other kids her age, Kennedy must face all the secrets her mom apparently kept from her and which now changes her life – forever! Legacy of a secret society “The Legion” those kids are all now orphans who have to fight the evil to rescue the world!

Yeah, talk about a big responsibility. But instead of growing up to fit into this role, Kennedy had no idea and now was to learn about paranormal entities and her own role in this.

Protect Yourself and stay away from dark haunted mansions…

The whole feeling of the book was dark , eerie and mysterious. Ghost and demons exists and I have to throw again “Supernatural” at you as it is the best way to describe the feeling of the book. Ghosts are often angry and dangerous so forget about nice little ghosts and think more poltergeists! Shivers As the kids go on a search to fight the over powerful demon, they visit lots of haunted places that were truly scary, sinister and spooky!

So, what is The Legion? Mythology extraordinaire

I absolutely loved the mythology about the Legion and it gives this whole book a true epic feeling! Kami Garcia not only put al lot of care in creating the mythology the book is also filled with drawings that adds a level of excitement when turning a page and seeing a drawing with a hidden symbol or an old journal entry! The whole journey of figuring out the secrets of The Legion and how Kennedy fits in was mysterious and thrilling and transformed this book into a true page-turner!

Five Kids – Two Hot Boys and One Girl And.. Love?

Those 5 kids couldn’t have been more different from each other and I loved every one of them deeply. Getting to know the personalities and secrets of these kids was amazing to figure out and I found myself caring for each of them deeply. Of course, not all were easy to love but that was the beauty of seeing them develop and open up to each other. In the end, they only had each other!

I loved Kennedy’s bravery even though she was often so very lost and sad. But, her desperate wish to belong and her wish to finally find a family even if those kids weren’t related by blood warmed my heart deeply for her.

The romance  between Kennedy and one of the twins (not saying!!) was beautifully and wonderfully endearing! Jared and Lucas were two hot twins who were do so different in their personality even though they were identical twins. Initially I was a little scared to tell them apart, but they had such different personalities, different characters that I loved getting to know each one of them better.

  2. I read this one so long ago, I’m having a hard time remembering it! This is what happens when you read books on the way home from BEA and they’re not out until October. But I couldn’t wait! I’m going to have to reread it so I can review it ASAP!

  3. Great review, Danny! I got this one at BEA, but like so many good ones, I haven’t gotten to it yet. Everytime I look at my bookshelf, though, I am drawn to it. I really need to bump this one up. It sounds great!

  4. I’m so looking forward to reading this book, Danny. The characters sound absolutely fabulous and I love how you get to know each and everyone of them. I particularly curious about the 2 hot twin brothers! 😉
I’m not a big fan of ghosts in YA books either, but for once I’m looking forward to a story with them.
Also, I’m glad to hear that the mythology is well-done. Plus, you described this as Supernatural meets Illuminati. There’s no way I can’t not read this book now.
Just one question though, is it a love triangle between Kennedy and the boys?
    Great review, Danny!

Yes, there is a tiny Trinagle but I think Kami handled it very well and it was very soon clear who she would pick. She was not struggling for long and found that one of the twins would be much better for her than the other. I was worried too in the beginning but I think it was absolutely ok the way it developed and it made a lot of sense:)

  5. Yeah Danny! You know I really enjoyed this one too, it definitely had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Some of the push/pull of the romance frustrated me, but not to the degree that it detracted from my overall enjoyment and I desperately want to know how things are going to work out for them in the next book! Loved the plot too, it kept me guessing and I need book 2 asap:)

  9. I just finished this book about 30 minutes ago. I’m still trying to decide what I think of it. I’m thinking probably a 3 or 3.5. I like that it mixed it paranormal and horror. It had a strong concept. But it just didn’t hook me completely.

  11. On the Stephen King scale- What is the horror factor? lol I’m not a huge fan of things that will give me nightmares but I do love ghost stories. However, I am not in love with that cover. I just can’t figure it out and it’s really weird. It has kind of kept me from being too interested in this book. But hmmm that trailer has me a little more interested!! And then you’re review! Nice one!

Hm, so I do not do very good with Stephen King, but then mostly I cannot watch the movies. With books I do a little better with horror. And oh I would say spooky and scary, but then I could read it and then go to sleep and I am very sensitive to horror 🙂

Well you’re ahead of me Danny! I can’t read his books without getting nightmares!! The Stand had me dreaming about the apocalypse long before all these YA books about it ever came out! I don’t do his movies at all. If you could sleep after it…was any worse than hmm I can’t think of a scary book I’ve read. I know I was tense during Anna Dressed in Blood. I can’t think of anything scary. Oh well.
