When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Intense Action is a Reading Rush

Better With Science

Anna’s world at the beginning of this book is fairly enclosed. Homeschooled by her scientist father, living in a remote location where he conducts his work, she spends the formative years of her life living with few interactions with her peers. Still, she has her boys, the subjects of her father’s research, that she gets to help with. They seem to live a halcyon sort of existence…that is if you’re willing to overlook the fact that Anna’s father’s work involves locking 4 boys up on his farm for scientific experiments.

On The Run

Then all of a sudden the basic tenets of Anna’s life change: the boys are out, her father’s no longer around and everything she thought she knew is turned upside down. While her attraction to Sam and her friendship with the other boys allow her to maintain some grasp on this new reality, the tension of how altered things have become and everything she learns along the way takes it’s toll.

Intense Action

I loved the way this book had a Bourne Identity feel to it…it had a quick pace and we learn a lot about Anna, her back ground and the mysterious Branch in this book. And while the ending is perfectly good for a stand alone, I’m glad to hear we’ll find out more about the Branch and see more of Anna and the boys!

Bewitched Rating

Bottom Line

Filled with action and mystery, Altered by Jennifer Rush will keep you turning the pages and wondering just what insanity is around the next corner.

Get your own Audiobook at audible: Title (unabridged, Xhrs Xmin)

This is one of those instances where for me, the audiobook could have been better.  The narrator, Cassie Holloway, did a good enough job reading the book, but for me that was the crux of the problem:  she read this book rather than narrated it.  There was a certain something missing in her rendition of the book:  an emotional depth and a verbal pacing that I’ve come to enjoy and expect from the other audiobooks I’ve had the pleasure to review.  But the story is so enjoyable, the audioversion’s fine if that’s your medium of choice, I just wouldn’t go out of my way for this particular rendition.

Now go and get lost…in a book!
