Weekly meme from The Story Siren. The idea is to post the books you got this week, whether you bought them, got them as a gift, from the library, or received them to review.

Hi, everyone! I have several books for you guys this week (All links for books and authors are to Goodreads, descriptions are from Goodreads, click the book covers to go to the Amazon.com page for the book)

Let’s start off with the lone book that I preordered and couldn’t wait to get into my hands: The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson.madnessunderneath

After her near-fatal run-in with the Jack the Ripper copycat, Rory Devereaux has been living in Bristol under the close watch of her parents. So when her therapist suddenly suggests she return to Wexford, Rory jumps at the chance. But Rory’s brush with the Ripper touched her more than she thought possible: she’s become a human terminus, with the power to eliminate ghosts on contact. She soon finds out that the Shades—the city’s secret ghost-fighting police—are responsible for her return. The Ripper may be gone, but now there is a string of new inexplicable deaths threatening London. Rory has evidence that the deaths are no coincidence. Something much more sinister is going on, and now she must convince the squad to listen to her before it’s too late.

In this follow-up to the Edgar Award-nominated The Name of the Star, Maureen Johnson adds another layer of spectacularly gruesome details to the streets of London that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

After reading the ARC of The Name of the Star that I picked up at BEA in 2011, I knew that I had to get the second book in this series so I preordered it as soon as I could from Amazon. I loved it so much and I can’t wait to catch up with Rory and the rest of the gang in London again. I’ve never been disappointed with one of Maureen Johnson’s books, so I can’t wait to dig into this one as well.

And now for the review copies, and I’ve gotten several over the last four weeks:

Blood Makes Noise by Gregory Widen (Thanks Thomas & Mercer) — expected publication April 30, 2013.Blood Makes Noise

On a summer’s night in 1955, CIA agent Michael Suslov is summoned to a secret vault in the heart of Buenos Aires. His mission: transport the corpse of Eva Peron to a new hiding place in the wake of her husband’s fall from power. But before Michael can comply, everything goes tragically, horribly wrong…

Sixteen years later, Michael Suslov is a ghost of a man, an ex-government agent living off the radar—and the only soul alive who knows where Evita is buried. When an old friend from Argentine Military Intelligence appeals to him for help bringing the body home, Michael agrees, hoping this final mission will quiet the demons from his past. But he’s not the only one on a recovery mission: two rogue CIA agents are tracking him, desperate to unearth Evita before Michael does—and to claim the secret millions they believe she took to her grave.

Based on a little-known yet fascinating true story, Blood Makes Noise is a brilliant examination of the power of the dead over the lives of the living.

The synopsis of this sounds really interesting, and I haven’t read anything in this genre in a while. It appears to have all the elements of a very exciting story, and since the author is a screen writer with some impressive movies under his belt, I have high hopes.

I received Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren from Simon & Schuster.beautifulbastard

An ambitious intern.
A perfectionist executive.
And a whole lot of name calling.
Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He’s exacting, blunt, inconsiderate—and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative—completely infuriating—creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules—or outright smash them—if it means he can have her. All over the office.

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.

Originally only available online as The Office by tby789—and garnering over two million reads on fan fiction sites—Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release

As I’ve admitted to reading Twilight fanfic before, I’d never read The Office so I agreed to give this one a shot. My review will be up in a couple of weeks if you want to see what I thought.

I got a copy of The Fury by Alexander Gordon Smith from MacMillan. — expected publication: July 23, 2013thefury

From the creator of the Escape from Furnace series, a ferocious epic of supernatural terror, perfect for Stephen King fans

Imagine if one day, without warning, the entire human race turns against you, if every person you know, every person you meet becomes a bloodthirsty, mindless savage . . . That’s the horrifying reality for Cal, Brick, and Daisy. Friends, family, even moms and dads, are out to get them. Their world has the Fury. It will not rest until they are dead.

In Alexander Gordon Smith’s adrenaline-fueled saga, Cal and the others must uncover the truth about what is happening before it destroys them all. But survival comes at a cost. In their search for answers, what they discover will launch them into battle with an enemy of unimaginable power.

This book promises to be super scary, full of novel, inventive zombies, and it’s YA. It’s almost 700 pages long, so I’ll have to start reading it well before it’s July 2013 publication date. Horror makes me happy, so this book should be awesome.

JL Bryan sent me a copy of book five in his Songs of Magic series, Fairyvision.FairyVisionEbookCover

The fifth book in the Songs of Magic series!

Jason, Erin, and the other Zebras go on a world tour with their enchanted instruments, only to encounter the mysterious supernatural Folk of India and the Far East. While they tangle with their record company, Erin tries to avoid dealing with the secrets she’s learned about herself, while Jason pieces together a mystery surrounding a very special golden guitar called Caliburn.

In Faerie, Aoide the Lutist and her troupe finally return home from their long adventure. They’re struggling to get new gigs, but Aoide senses opportunity in the form of special new magic mirrors that can broadcast concerts, plays, and other entertainment all over Faerie…

I love, love, love this YA fantasy series, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for everyone. I’m especially excited to see what happens to Erin with the knowledge of her new found family heritage.

Finally, I got a paper ARC of Dare You To by Katie McGarry (Thank you Katie and Harlequin Teen!!!!!) – expected publication: May 28, 2013dareyouto

Ryan lowers his lips to my ear. “Dance with me, Beth.”

“No.” I whisper the reply. I hate him and I hate myself for wanting him to touch me again….

“I dare you…”

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk’s home life, they’d send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom’s freedom and her own happiness. That’s how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn’t want her and going to a school that doesn’t understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn’t get her, but does….

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can’t tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn’t be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won’t let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all….

I am so excited for this book. Pushing the Limits was one of my favorite books last year, and I’m sure that Dare You To will be just as good. Beth seemed so complex and angry in the first book, and I can’t wait to get a good look at what she’s really like. And look at that cover, boy is that intense!

So that’s my mailbox of vary different kinds of books for this month. What’s in your mailbox?

Sometimes, I do not want my parents to know what I”m reading and this just SCREAMS it lol! “No, Dad, I do not need to hear the ‘Talk’ again… Yes, I know, I was dropped off by a stork on the front step…. Got it!” Lol!

Lol, the kissy-kissy cover didn’t bother me because I’m so ancient, but I totally see what you mean. I guess that’s why they make book covers and e-books! You might have to hide this one inside of another book, Shae. 😉 it’s going to a great book, I have high hopes.

Both of these books were sequels that I couldn’t wait to read this year, Jenea. I hope they are as good as the first installments.

  6. I need to read the Shades of London books. They look right up my alley. I might try the audiobooks.

And Dare You To! So jealous! Pushing the Limits was a favorite book from last year, and I cannot wait to read Beth’s story. I’ve heard great things.

    Happy reading 🙂

The first Shades of London book was excellent, so I hope I enjoy the second installment. You can’t really go wrong with anything by Maureen Johnson.

I’m really lucky that I got a copy of Dare You To and I can’t wait to read it!
