Velveteen by Daniel Marks  on goodreads:

Velveteen Monroe is dead. At 16, she was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven. It’s gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’ll be brutal… and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules… or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

Velveteen comes with a promise of an edgy and dark story and a gorgeous cover. Both made it impossible to resist… Oh and can we take a minute to admire this über-gorgeous cover????? It’s absolutely perfect and I just LOVE the colors!!!

Purgatory and Murder….

The main focus of this story was to introduce the world and basics of Purgatory, where Velvet finds herself into when he was murdered. Daniel Marks did an outstanding job developing the scenery which seems all grey and bizarre. However, I had a hard time getting into the basics and it took me a long time getting a full grasp on the things that are going on in Purgatory. Often I felt lost in the intense descriptions. The other part centered around Velveteen’s murder Bonesaw, but from the synopsis I found the focus to be rather shifted and Bonesaw was not more than a side-aspect of the whole story arc.. I actually felt a little cheated since it was one of the aspects that drew me in the most!

Velveteen – snarky and edgy

Velvet’s attitude was actually one of the highlights in this book for me! I love my heroine’s fearless and snarky and that is exactly how you could best describe this girl! Even though she was murdered she focused all her anger away with a lot of snark! Sometimes a  little too much, and I would have liked to see a more vulnerable side of her. But in the end, Velvet was a great heroine with a lot of bad-ass, kick-ass and tons of snark!

Love in that dark ane grey place…

Nick was the perfect counterpart to Velvet snarky and edgy attitude. He brought light and fun in this dark place and in Velvet’s existence.  However, the romance could have played out better, with more butterflies and heart melting scenes. I admit, that I have yet to encounter a male author to bring me this kind of heartbreaking romance that make me heart truly melt…

Bottom Line

Velveteen was dark ,edgy with a good amount of snark! The world building was vividly outstanding , but it dragged out a little too long for my taste. Velveteen definitely took off in a new dark world and I am looking forward seeing what’s next in Purgatory.

  1. I’m actually reading this book right now and I’m really liking it so far. I enjoy the darker side of the story but I’m sad to hear that her murderer is just a side plot. I do agree though that Velvet has a lot of attitude and I really like that. I’m only halfway through the book so I guess I shall have to see how the second half of the book goes before I officially decide how I feel.

    Thanks for the great review!

  2. This was a DNF for me. I just couldn’t stick with it any longer. I had the intention of going back but I have zero interest in doing so. No, that’s not true, I’m curious to find out what happens with Bonesaw, is there any sort of wrap up with him? The beginning of the book was good but once she went to purgatory I just struggled along. I stuck with it to about the halfway mark then set it down. I’m glad some were able to stick with it and enjoy it though!
