The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkosk  on goodreads:
Darcy Jones doesn’t remember anything before the day she was abandoned as a child outside a Chicago firehouse. She has never really belonged anywhere—but she couldn’t have guessed that she comes from an alternate world where the Great Chicago Fire didn’t happen and deadly creatures called Shades terrorize the human population.

Memories begin to haunt Darcy when a new boy arrives at her high school, and he makes her feel both desire and desired in a way she hadn’t thought possible. But Conn’s interest in her is confusing. It doesn’t line up with the way he first looked at her.
As if she were his enemy.

When Conn betrays Darcy, she realizes that she can’t rely on anything—not herself, not the laws of nature, and certainly not him. Darcy decides to infiltrate the Shadow Society and uncover the Shades’ latest terrorist plot. What she finds out will change her world forever . . .

In this smart, compulsively readable novel, master storyteller Marie Rutkoski has crafted an utterly original world, characters you won’t soon forget, and a tale full of intrigue and suspense.

The Shadow Society drew me in with a unique premise and a catching cover. However, I truly had not a real idea about what to expect but I found myself caught into this story very soon…

What’s normal and where is reality….

The Story starts with Darcy who is a very unique character. She’s shy and as an orphan she is bounced from one foster home to the next. Only this time, she stayed with her foster mom for more than one year and now she hopes her life will turn around – for the better… For the first time she makes friends – awesome friends who love her deeply – but soon Darcy must discover that her life will turn, but it will be a hurrican of events that finally lead to the truth about Darcy and her family…

Darcy – shy, strong loyal but brave when she needs to be

I love when characters grow with their circumstances and Darcy is no expection. In the beginning we get to know her as shy introvert and just your normal teenage girl. It’s clear where her behavior comes from. Being aline for so long never able to form family bonds. But, since her forster mom is not pushing her away for once she creates her own family and begins to trust her friends. She’s loyal and loving and she was an easy to love girl! However, when Conn turns her life upside down she’s forced to be strong and it’s one of those perfect examples that you can grow and adapt with your circumstances and that’s what Darcy does!

Mystery surrounded Conn- To trust, or not..

Conn was a phenomenal character as hee was sourrounded with mystery and you never knew if you would like to love or hate him. Just as Darcy struggles, we also do never know if we should trust him or stay away from him. I love these controversies in characters! It adds the spice to every story! And Oh yes Conn is definitely the spice here!!

Shadows, Humans – racism and  pre justices…

Marie Rutkoski created a very clever plot that deals with racism and prejustices but packed in a supernatural aspect. Humans hate Shaodws and Shadows hate humans – they want nothing else than to get rid of the other race. Where this hate comes from? We never know and this is just once aspect I found was lacking. However, Marie might have done this on purpose. Why to we hate another race so fiercely? What is the bottom of racism ? Often (or most of the times) we do not know!

Love that knows no race, color and boundaries!

The love story was sweet and passionate and slowly growing! Darcy had to trust her heart and not what other people dictate her to think. The allure of this sweet romance had a lot to do with the mystery of Conn’s character and it made the whole love story just more enticing. Love was a strong aspect in the whole scheme of the story and specially the ending made my heart flutter.

Bottom Line

Strong, alluring, mysterious and heartwarming, The Shadow Society was a great story about the power of love that knows now boundaries and races. Altogether packed in a great paranormal story about different realities, this story will be appeal to everyone who loves a alluring romance and a unique paranormal story!

  1. I knew you’d be a fan of Conn!!! I loved that I was suspicious of him the entire time, it kept me glued to the pages wondering what aspect of Conn’s character was going to shine through in the next chapter. I agree with you on the reasoning for racism (speciesism?), I would have liked a little more backstory there as well, but all in all I loved this one!

You got me at the slow going romance part. I didn’t snatch this one up but now I think I should have! Plus like that the girls name is Darcy.
