EXCERPT: THE HOME

Freeman peeked out the window. The kids were in gym class, and Freeman had faked a sprained ankle. He’d been sent to the rec room again, where he was supposed to rest and watch whatever uplifting program PBS was broadcasting. Instead, Dr. Phil was brow-beating a couple into a changing day in their lives. He turned the sound on the television down so the noise wouldn’t distract him.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the yellowed newspaper clipping. A tiny piece of it broke away as he unfolded it. The photograph had faded a little over the years, but it still had the power to reach off the page and squeeze Freeman’s throat.

The headline above: “Psychiatrist Arrested In Wife’s Murder.”
And then came the deck: “Mills Was Respected In Mental Health Circles.”
Like all small-town papers, the Neuse River Tribune delivered sensationalism with a community touch. The article hinted at the gruesome nature of the crime with phrases such as “mutilated corpse” and “unsuspecting victim,” but also included eyewitness testimony:
“Dr. Mills was the nicest man you ever met,” said Doris Jenkins, who had lived next to the Millses for four years. “He was quiet and always waved hello. You never would have expected something like this.”
Doris Jenkins, as Freeman recalled, had been an old witch who shook her broom at the kids whenever a stray football bounced into her roses. In her account to the press, she neglected to mentioned she’d never waved back. Now she was frozen in ink as the voice of authority. Whatever.
Freeman read the article all the way through, though he knew it by heart. His name was in the last paragraph. The poor kid who hadn’t spoken since witnessing the terrible tragedy. The kid who was in an emergency foster placement until Social Services could figure out what to do with him.
The kid who grew up to be him.
Breaking Dawn Part II (and movie theaters with reserved seating)
When The Twilight Saga: Eclipse came out in theaters, about fifteen of us from several states and three different countries (including our beloved Danny and Pushy) got together here in Chicago to watch the midnight premiere. Since then, my sister and I have watched each movie at the midnight opening, albeit with a much smaller crowd because the hype has died down considerably. Now it’s just the two of us with reserved seating tickets at a theater near our house, which will make it so much easier for my old butt to drive home at three a.m. By now it’s just tradition, so we might as well finish out the series (and it’s a good excuse to take a Friday off of work).
While I’ll admit to laughing through a good chunk of each of these movies, I’m hoping for a real fight towards the end of this one. Please let this movie not be as much of a let down as the book was with no real confrontation! Bella does seem pretty bad ass now that she’s a vampire, and I’m looking forward to seeing all of the other vampire clans.

and what do you think about the Twilight series movie adaptations? They’re okay, never should have been made, have gotten better with each movie, so over it? I’m personally more looking forward to the next Hunger Games movie!

Weee, another fan! The huge viewing party was really fun, but Pushy went crazy planning everything 😉 Even though I’ll be super tired after waking up at 4:30 in the morning to go to work on Thursday, I’ll soldier through to make it all the way to midnight and watch this last one. And then I’m done with midnight shows. I’m getting too old for these kinds of things!

I’ll admit, I’m not enough of a fan to work up the enthusiasm to watch these movies. 😉 I watched the first and New Moon, but that’s where my journey ends with this series. 🙂 I hope you enjoy it though! Hopefully there will be more of a climax than what we got in the book. 🙂

I’m not going to the midnight showing, but I’m definitely going to the over 21 theater because when I saw BD1 the tweens/teens annoyed me to no end. I’m hoping for a big fight too! I was so disappointed in how anticlimactic the ending of the book was.

We saw Eclipse and Breaking Dawn Part I in the over 21 reserved seating section of a theater that had a bar. It definitely made a difference. But I didn’t want to drive an hour when it was going to be just my sister and I, so we’re going to another reserved seating theater that’s only 20 minutes away. Hopefully the teens are at a minimum. I know it won’t be as deathly quiet as the Hunger Games was 😉

I will be there for the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn part 2 as well Heather! Like you, it’s tradition with me and a couple friends, so we can’t give up now when we’ve made it through the previous 4. I’ve laughed at many a thing that was not supposed to be funny in these movies, but I still love them:)

There are certainly a number of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to deliver up.
