Here’s the deal. I’m thirty-five. Soon to be thirty-six next month. I feel like there was a time I was “hip” and “cool” and “down” with technology. I was one of the only seniors in high school to have an email address and was pretty darn good at surfing the web using Infoseek and Lycos on my sweet dial-up AOL account. Fast forward through various screen names on Telnet in college to my first year teaching and figuring out how my high school students were disabling their cookies on their web-based music theory course. And now I find myself using Twitter and Facebook on a daily basis and wondering how this Pinterest thing has landed in my lap.
Why in the world do I need Pinterest? I don’t cook the recipes I have in countless books I own. I’m not good at crafts. *glares at glue gun* I also spend way too much time on the computer as it is (internet business owner extraordinaire). But then I went to this session on Pinterest at BEA where I finally GOT the concept and started thinking about how I could use it at the Bookworms and why I should.
First of all, it’s quick and easy. See a picture, pin it! BAM! Secondly, it’s all over this 30-something-women-market. And finally, it’s fun! I’m not gonna tell you I stayed up for evenings on end andnowI’msoaddictedmyhusbandhaslockeddownmylaptopbytenPM, but I did have a heck of a time imagining the characters in my mind and hoping I could find an image that was perfect for my new boards.
See, I’m hip and cool and am all over Pinterest like glitter on my three year old.

This is a great post Kristen! I am trying to use Pinterest for my blog. I’m just getting into it. One thing that irritates me when I pin my own reviews to pinterest – and other people’s reviews sometimes – is that the cover photo is cropped. I can’t figure out how to change that.

I have to admit–I’ve turned into a Pinterest addict. I’ve always been a very visual person so all the pretty pictures…yep, pinned that (usually hot men, bookish things, and travely places). I haven’t yet used it for my blog but I know it’s a great way to get eyes on great books and reviews. I’ll have to play with it when I have time. (I’m “Mary Brebner” on there, if you’re interested…)

Oh my gosh, your husband locks down your internet by a certain time too??? LOL my mom’s boyfriend does that to all our laptops as well (except it’s one a.m. haha so I guess it shouldn’t be a big deal… but still!)! x)
I’m going to be the first person to say that I really have no idea how to work Pinterest and what it’s even about haha (except pinning, I’ll bet!). And I don’t have Facebook or Twitter either, so I feel like a failure of a teenager LOL! :’) But I think that all of those networking things are super-duper important for blogging, and this is a great post, Kristen! <3

Ha! No, it’s not so bad as that – but I get “the look” and I know I need to shut it down!
The networking part is a bonus, but it’s also a fun way to compile images and ideas for books and well, other things like hot guys and hair styles. But maybe that’s just me……

I have to admit, I didn’t really know what Pinterest was for until a few weeks ago. A lot of those boards are great to have a scroll through and if I had an account, I’m sure I would be pretty addicted to the site now. 😉 Anyway, I’m glad to see you enjoyed The Raven Boys! I hear you! I felt the same way about Pinterest, I don’t need anything else….but now i have an account and love it but try to stay off it because you can lose hours!

It is a total time sucker. I was also trying to explain it to the hubs and he gives me this blank stare like, Why in the world do you need more stuff to do on the internet? Oh well! When my house and store looks spiffy or I find new books to read for him, maybe he’ll get it… lol!

I didn’t get pinterest at first but then I figured it out and found it’s easy to browse pictures for hours a day and now I mostly stay away. I think I don’t fully understand how it can work to promote a blog, but I do know it’s a fun place. And it’s AWESOME for inspiration! I’m not good with cooking or crafts either, but I love the different clothing styles and scenery and even the decorating stuff. It’s a fun place!

I think the networking part works because you can pin back to different thing on your blog or whatever sort of thing you’re trying to promote. I know Danny pins our special features and meme images so that if you click on it on Pinterest it will link back to our blog. So hopefully we will find a couple more readers that way.
But really, I just like the way you can organize things and get great ideas or leads for books. It IS fun!

I’m 21 and I’m a big computer/internet geek, and I’m still trying to find a use for Pinterest. I guess I’m just having a hard time figuring out why I need Pinterest in addition to like.. photo albums on my Facebook page.

I was resistant but I said I’d never have a twitter account and now I have TWO! So who knows! I think the part that’s different from a FB album is the sheer volume and variety of things on Pinterest. SO it’s like Tumblr but instead of having a bunch of pics on a page all willy nilly, they are pinned and organized to your boards. So if you’re planning a birthday party and you look at ideas, you don’t have to bookmark things. Just pin images and ideas which will link you to the full page it came from. Or with books, if you’re doing a read-along and want to discuss characters or plot lines, you could easily do what I did in finding little things to pin on each character for discussion.
