The Fame Game by Lauren Conrad:In Hollywood, fame can be found on every corner and behind any door. You just have to know where to look for it. Nineteen-year-old Madison Parker made a name for herself as best frenemy of nice-girl-next-door Jane Roberts on the hot reality show L.A. Candy. Now Madison’s ready for her turn in the spotlight and she’ll stop at nothing to get it. Sure, she’s the star of a new show, but with backstabbing friends and suspicious family members trying to bring her down, Madison has her work cut out for her. Plus, there’s a new nice girl in “reality” townβ€”aspiring actress Carmen Price, the daughter of Hollywood royaltyβ€”and she’s a lot more experienced at playing the fame game… When the camera’s start rolling, whose star will shine brighter?Filled with characters both familiar and new, Lauren Conrad’s series about the highs and lows of being famous delivers Hollywood gossip and drama at every turn.
Again, sometimes I feel like I should do my homework before picking up a book! When I first read this synopsis I wanted to read it because I was hoping it would be fun! Only later I realized that this was indeed a spin-off of another series by Lauren Conrad: L.A. Candy (3 books)Β . But.. I shouldn’t have worried! It was easy to get into the story even without having read this series before!

Reality Show! How much of you is real??

The series centers around 4 girls that couldn’t be more different from each other, but they are all starring in the new Reality Show where they are being watched while trying to “make” it in Hollywood! The 4 girls are thrown together and each of them has to be careful to protect their life and their real self otherwise they would be eaten from the media. Some can do this better, some ..not so much! Still, they all struggle with being constantly filmed, trying to get their careerΒ going and still trying to remain a normal private life.

Girls Are Girls!

I loved the diversity in the girls characters and although I thought I wouldn’t be able to like Madison in the beginning – she grew on me while the story progressed and even managed to surprise my at the end! Gabriel, was the naiveΒ cluelessΒ girl, who is superΒ gorgeousΒ but a little dump – still I liked her although I didn’t connect with her!
My two favorite girls were Carmen and Kate!!! Carmen comes from a super richΒ celebrityΒ background and tried to get her own career going. But, she did all this with a heart and was farm from being an uptight, arrogant chick everyone expected her to be! She’s was actually the best friend you would wish to have! I liked her instantly!
Kate was the girl from the country – but a truly talented musician! She was completelyΒ overwhelmedΒ by everything and she was the girl easiest to make mistakes that could ruin her personality. She was cute, a little naive but positively genuine! Kate definitely was my favorite character!

Love, Romance, Truth and Lies

With me being a big fan of romance, I was happy to find a cute love interest in Luke! Young, handsome actor with a cute accent! *swoons*! He was constantly where the girls where and even fell in love with one of them! I loved their sweet and cute growing relationship! But, it wouldn’t be Hollywood if it would be that easy…
The plot was moving slowly and there was a lot of times when not so much was happening. It felt more of an introduction of all the girls, the boy and the whole idea of the series. Nevertheless I was entertained and I truly enjoyed the book despite it slow pace. A few twists and turns made it totally worth my time!

Bewitched Rating

Bottom Line

The Fame Game was a great kick off into a newΒ ContemporaryΒ series that will definitely stay on my Reading Pile! The Girls featured in this series are great with all character flaws and highlights that ensures an interesting mix and the promise of more drama, love, tears and friendship to come!

Additional Info

The Audiobook is with nearly 8 hrs the perfect length for such a story! The narrator Jenna Lamina did a perfect and wonderful job giving all the girls a different note and even getting Luke’s accent cute!!! The only complain was her take on Gabriel, she sounded way dumber than I would have liked her. But other than this! This is definitely a great audiobook!

  1. I’m always a little wary to read books written by celebrities. I’m glad that this one worked for you, Danny. I would love to see what really happens on this reality TV shows, so I might check it out some time ! πŸ™‚
Plus, Luke seems like a cutie ! πŸ˜€
    Great review, Danny.

I didn’t even know her when I picked up the book, so it didn’t bother me at all that she’s a celeb! Even more, now that I know I think she’s perfect to write such a book since she obviously knows what she’s writing about πŸ™‚

  2. Celebrity writers annoy me! Even if their books turn out to be good, I go in with a huge bias against it. Unfair? Maybe. But I also think it’s unfair to all the “normal” writers out there slaving away who aren’t handed a publishing contract just because of their name. (Jealous? Um, yes.) That being said, it one actually does sound good.

*giggles* Just like I said to the other two girls. I didn’t even know who she was when i picked up the book. It’s only later I found out that she’s a celeb!
But, I get what you are saying…. Some authors work their a** off and never get published even though they are super talented…

So, yes I agree but.. I read the book and I really liked it πŸ™‚

  4. I don’t know how many times I’ve managed to miss a spin-off as well! It’s more than a little annoying, haha. But I’m really glad that it didn’t matter for you! Spin-offs can definitely be great like that if you’re lucky. πŸ˜€

I admit you’ve made made me curious (especially when it comes to the boy there *giggles*), but it sucks it moved a bit slowly at times. :/ I’m glad you seemed to have enjoy it overall though!
