About Mothership

publication: July 10th 2012 by Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers Coming out today!!!

goodreads | facebook amazon | BookDepository

Pregnant. In space. Yeah, things are really looking up.

It’s 2074 and Elvie’s unplanned pregnancy (with Cole Archer, who bolted out of town half a millisecond after hearing the news, not that Elvie’s bitter about it or anything) forces her to leave her best bud back on Earth and spend her junior year aboard a corny old space cruiser with forty-five other hormonal teen girls (one of whom just happens to be her arch-nemesis).  Getting shipped off to the Hanover School for Expecting Teen Mothers was not how Elvie imagined spending her junior year, but she can go with the flow. That is, until a team of hot commandos hijacks the ship—and one of them turns out to be Cole.

Mothership is the first installment in a new trilogy from Martin Leicht and Isla Neal that has been described as Juno meets Pretty In Pink…but in space.

Martin and Isla share items they would include in a time capsule for Elvie to open in 2074.

Life will undoubtedly be very different for Elvie Nara in the year 2074. It’s fun to imagine all of the crazy technology and food and entertainment people will be exposed to sixty years from now. But sometimes it’s just as hilarious to look to the past and mock their conventions. So, in that vein, we were asked to think of some contemporary objects that we would put in a time capsule for Elvie to discover. She’d probably make fun of a lot of it—after all, these are things that would have been “cool” for her grandparents! Still, we think she’ll get a kick out of seeing what we were watching, wearing, eating, and more.

Elvie is a really big “flat-pic” fan (what we’d just call TV and movies). She loves a good story, good characters, and of course, some cheesy awesomeness. So we thought we’d better include some of our favorite shows from the past ten years or so for her to watch with her best bud, Ducky, while curled up with a big bowl of chocolate covered pickles (hey, pregnancy cravings are weird in any era!).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Long before Bella Swan was swooning over vampires, Buffy Summers was kicking them in the face and staking them through the heart. Despite its silly name, Buffy is a seriously kick-ass show with great action, snappy dialogue, campy good humor, and overwhelming heart. It even managed to work in a “musical” episode where everyone breaking into song actually makes sense! Seven seasons of Buffy and five seasons of the equally excellent spin-off Angel combined to form what became known as the “Buffy-verse.” It’s my hope that, somehow, when Elvie finds this in our time capsule, she’ll say: “Dur, like I don’t already have every single episode memorized??”

Watch the YouTube Video

Community (2009 – present)

It would be more appropriate to call this show a meta-com, rather than a more traditional sitcom. While it has never had the widest audience, there is no other show currently on television that so deftly parodies and emulates popular culture at the same time. It’s laugh-out-loud hilarious, and incredibly smart. What is so impressive is that the show works whether you understand the references or not. Someone like Elvie will snort her pickle-shake through her nose when Troy and Abed do a pitch perfect Law & Order good cop/bad cop routine, whereas Ducky will no doubt be enthralled by the amazingly ridiculous—or is that ridiculously amazing?—paintball battle royale.

Other shows Elvie would get a kick out of:

Mad Men (2007 – Present); Gilmore Girls (2000 – 2007); Friday Night Lights (2006 – 2011); Lost (2004 – 2010); Extras (2005 – 2007)

  1. Fun post! I have never watched Buffy or Friday Night Lights. I’ve always meant to. Do they dub the American TV shows in Germany or subtitle them?

    Oh you never watched Buffy??!?!?!?!?!?

And in Germany everything is dubbed and I have to say they are doing an amazing job! If you don’t look too closely you even don’t see the lips moving slightly different. But normally our languages are pretty similar so wer have a great industry taking care of awesomely dubbing:)

Which doesn’t mean I don’t prefer watching the original version, which I normally do whenever I can! But that’s just me trying to improve my english all the time 🙂

  3. LOL oh my gosh!!! I seriously had a burst of giggles here because we actually had a whole discussion about what would happen if you were pregnant in Space in English class! x) Does that make me super-duper intrigued? Absolutely!! And I loooooove the Buffy-verse too! I haven’t seen all the episodes yet, but I’ve seen enough to know that Buffy rocks and so does Angel :’)

Thanks so much for putting this EPIC-sounding book on my radar, Danny! I’ll bet it’s AMAZING! 😉 <3

  7. After sometime he becomes so involved with training and getting ready
for the competition that his wife, whose covetousness no longer has enough
control, wants him to quit teaching and turn into an accountant, to
enable them to have more money nevertheless the teacher was so committed to his work that they did his better to develop
his team. Before you’re making up your mind to download torrents, you need to ensure that your system includes a good anti-virus program installed. I try downloading’New Moon’ just to see if it’s up –
    but who am I kidding.

  9. s a bad side to the interest in digital content, and that.

A very convenient way to search for things about the web is to only speak your research
term. The vulnerability has apparently been fixed since interview with Russo took place,
and usernames are again safe and secure.
