Weekly meme from The Story Siren. The idea is to post the books you got this week, whether you bought them, got them as a gift, from the library, or received them to review.

Hi, everyone! After an exhausting but fun week in New York at Book Expo America, I’ve returned with a lot of books. I have one preorder that came in the mail and I’ll feature a few of the books from BEA that I’m most excited about.  (All links for books and authors are to Goodreads, descriptions are from Amazon, click the book covers to go to the Amazon.com page for the book)

First up, I preordered MaryJanice Davidson’s eleventh book in the Undead series, Undead and Unstable.

“If you’re fans of Sookie Stackhouse and Anita Blake, don’t miss Betsy Taylor. She rocks” (The Best Reviews)—and she’s back once again as a vampire queen who finds herself an unlucky (but fashionable) passenger on the road to damnation…

Betsy’s heartbroken over her friend Marc’s death, but at least his sacrifice should change the future—her future—for the better. But it’s not as if Betsy’s next few hundred years will be perfect. After all, her half-sister Laura is the AntiChrist, Laura’s mother is Satan, and family gatherings will always be more than a little awkward.

What’s really bothering Betsy is that ever since she and Laura returned from visiting her mom in Hell, Laura’s been acting increasingly peculiar. Maybe it’s Laura’s new job offer: as Satan’s replacement down under. Unfortunately, the position comes at a damnable price: killing Betsy, her own flesh-and-blood.

Over Betsy’s dead body. And for that matter Marc’s, too, since he’s not quite as buried as everyone thought. Now a war has been waged—one that’s going to take sibling rivalry to a whole new level, and a dimension where only one sister can survive.

Books from BEA

Wake by Amanda Hocking

Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong.

Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They’re the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone’s attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs.  She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door.  He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back.  Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever.  She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove.  They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price.  And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

I can’t wait to see what professional editors can do with Amanda Hocking’s writing, so I’m really excited that I snagged a copy of Wake!

Eve & Adam by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate

In the beginning, there was an apple –
And then there was a car crash, a horrible injury, and a hospital. But before Evening Spiker’s head clears a strange boy named Solo is rushing her to her mother’s research facility. There, under the best care available, Eve is left alone to heal.
Just when Eve thinks she will die – not from her injuries, but from boredom—her mother gives her a special project: Create the perfect boy.
Using an amazingly detailed simulation, Eve starts building a boy from the ground up. Eve is creating Adam. And he will be just perfect . . . won’t he?

I’m usually not a cover kind of girl, but this one drew me in. But once I read the description and it seems science-y, I was sold. I had this on my list before I even stepped foot inside the Javits center.

Burn For Burn by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

Payback is paradise in this start to a trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian.Postcard-perfect Jar Island is home to charming tourist shops, pristine beaches, amazing oceanfront homes—and three girls secretly plotting revenge.

KAT is sick and tired of being bullied by her former best friend.

LILLIA has always looked out for her little sister, so when she discovers that one of her guy friends has been secretly hooking up with her, she’s going to put a stop to it.

MARY is perpetually haunted by a traumatic event from years past, and the boy who’s responsible has yet to get what’s coming to him.

None of the girls can act on their revenge fantasies alone without being suspected. But together…anything is possible.

With an unlikely alliance in place, there will be no more “I wish I’d said…” or “If I could go back and do things differently…” These girls will show Jar Island that revenge is a dish best enjoyed together.

This book wasn’t on my radar until I met Jenny Han at the Book Blogger Convention on Monday and Siobhan Vivian at the Teen Author Carnival on Tuesday. They were so enthusiastic and the book sounded soooo good, I just had to pick up a copy!

Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

“I won’t tell anyone, Echo. I promise.” Noah tucked a curl behind my ear. It had been so long since someone touched me like he did. Why did it have to be Noah Hutchins? His dark brown eyes shifted to my covered arms. “You didn’t do that-did you? It was done to you?” No one ever asked that question. They stared. They whispered. They laughed. But they never asked.
“An edgy romance that pulls you in and never lets go. I was hooked!”-Gena Showalter,  New York Times bestselling author of the Intertwined series

So wrong for each other…and yet so right.
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with “freaky” scars on her arms. Even Echo can’t remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal.

But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo’s world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she’ll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

This was another one that wasn’t on my radar until I met the author. All four of us Bookworms that were in New York for BEA met Katie McGarry on Sunday before BEA started, and she is such a sweet, smart, genuinely nice woman–and she was a lot of fun! Look out for a joint review from all four of us soon!

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Marriage can be a real killer.

One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

This was my favorite book that I’ve read this year, hands down. I was very excited to get a finished hardcover signed by Gillian Flynn at BEA. I reviewed Gone Girl on Thursday and you can enter to win a copy of your own by clicking here.

Those are the books that I’m most excited to read that I picked up at BEA. What have you read recently that’s been great, and have you heard great things about something that I’ve picked up? You can check out my Goodreads shelf for everything that I got at BEA 2012 here. Happy reading!

Burn For Burn sounds like a great book, I haven’t heard of it before today but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it! The cover for Eve and Adam looks amazing, and it sounds like an intriguing story – I remember reading some Katherine Applegate books when I was young, so I’ll be interested to see what this is like. Happy reading! 🙂

I haven’t read Jenny Han’s books before, but I’d heard of them. I’ve just been stuck in a pattern of supernatural YA when I’ve read it. All of these books look amazing, so I hope they hold up to my expectations!

  9. I’m really looking forward to EVE AND ADAM and WAKE.

GONE GIRL was great! I just interviewed Gillian on HuffPo. Have you read SHARP OBJECTS? I think that’s one of the creepiest books I’ve ever read. My dad just read it and said the same thing.

Hey, Julie! I read Sharp Objects when it first came out, and I loved it!! It was so dark and twisted and right up my alley–definitely my kind of book. I have her second book, Dark Places, but I haven’t read it yet. I’ll have to check out your interview. Do you have a link yet?
