Me: Hey Mia, thank you so much for stopping by the Bewitched Bookworms today!! Glad you had some time to chat with me!

Mia: Sure thing. Thanks for having me!

Me: Mia, I would like to let our Readers know a little more about the world you live in. How did life change after the Big Earthquake?

Mia: My life has never been simple. Being a lightning addict comes with its fair share of problems. But I never imagined things could get this hard. My mom was downtown, in the epicenter of the earthquake when it hit. She was buried alive under a fallen building, trapped and suffocating, for three days. She had one foot in the grave when a rescue team found her. Now she’s home, but she’s not the same. She goes from being catatonic to having violent panic attacks in the space of a second. I have to load her full of meds to keep her calm, but the only way to get those meds is on the black market on Venice Beach. I risk my life every time I go there.

Everything necessary for survival is scarce. The roads in and out of the city are impassable, and the goods that are flown in keep being looted before they can reach the people they’re meant for. Nowhere is safe, not even my own home.

Me: There are these new groups that formed after the Big Earthquake, and I have to say both scare me a little. What is your feeling about them?

Mia: They scare me, too. Believe me. I don’t know which is worse, the Followers or the Seekers. The Followers definitely have the creep factor going at full effect, walking around town dressed all in white, with those blank eyes and those pasted on smiles. It’s like they don’t even realize the whole world has crumbled around them. But they’re believers in the word of Rance Ridley Prophet, and he’s convinced them all that once they’ve surrendered their souls to him, they’re saved, while the rest of humanity is doomed. Kind of makes their smiles even creepier.

But the Seekers . . . they have their own special brand of crazy cult weirdness going on. The way they move in formation, like they’re all connected by some invisible string . . . the relentless way they pursue me (Especially Katrina. You have no idea how much I want to punch her in the face). And don’t let them fool you. The Seekers may not walk around dressed all in white like the Followers. They look just like everyone else. Well, except Katrina, who dresses like a stripper vampire. But the Seekers have their own ritual ensemble, which they don for “special” occasions. You’ll see.

The Seekers and the Followers have one thing in common, though. The scariest thing of all . . . they both want something from me. Something I didn’t want to give.

Me: Can we talk about the lightening strikes? I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable here and I promise this stays between us.

Mia: Umm. Yeah. Yeah, okay.

Me: Yes? Thanks! So, how does it feel for you to get struck?

Mia: It’s like you thought you were alive, and then the lightning finds you, and grabs you, and rips through your blood and lights you on fire, and you realize you were never alive until this moment. There’s pain . . . pain like you can’t imagine. Every molecule in your body on fire and screaming. It’s beyond pain . . . so far beyond that it becomes something new. A word that hasn’t been invented yet.

And once it’s over . . . you’re dead until you meet the lightning again. Until you get your fix.

Me: Ok let’s move on, there is the new boy at your school – Jeremy. He seems … different?

Mia: Jeremy . . . I like his name. Don’t you? It’s so . . . I don’t know, normal. But he’s not normal. All you have to do is look in his eyes, and you know there’s something wrong with him. He tries to hide it behind those Clark Kent glasses he wears . . . who he really is. Where he comes from. What happened to him. He’s haunted. I can tell. I know how it feels.

Me: Are you afraid of him?

Mia: I’m afraid of what he’s hiding from me, the thing that haunts him. Whatever it is, it’s bad. And I’m afraid of what happens when he touches me. He makes me see things I don’t want to see.

And I’m afraid, because I want him to touch me anyway.

Me: But, he’s cute right? Grin

Mia: Cute doesn’t begin to describe him. When I look at him I feel like I’m falling. Sometimes I am, and I just have to hope he’s there to catch me. Sometimes he is. And sometimes he disappears when I need him most.

Some last random Questions:

Me: What is the most important thing in your life right now?

Mia: Keeping my family safe. After all I’ve put them through, I owe them that much.

Me: If you’d have one wish, what would it be?

Mia: I’d want to know why. Why am I like this? I want to know that even more than I want to be normal.

Me: Boys: Dark Hair or Light Hair.

Mia: I never knew I had a preference until Jeremy. Now . . . dark.

Me: Movies or Books?

Mia: Don’t judge me, but I’m a movie girl. I don’t have the patience for books.

Me: Thank you so much Mia for stopping by today!!! It was great chatting with you!

Mia: Thanks for having me! I hope you enjoy the story of my life.

  1. I’m so intrigued by this book.
i used to love the name Jeremy as a kid. It’s not one of my favorites now but it’s still nice. I’m more a fan of Jeremiah or Josiah.

  4. The feelings on this one have been all over the place. I have a copy but I’ve been wary of reading it. There’s some religious topics right? Or maybe that’s another book lol. Mia sounds very sweet and smart. I’ll try to make time for it next month and check out what the fuss is about 🙂

    Danny 5/17/2012

I think it touches some religious aspects but more in terms of weird cults, which is why I can deal with this much easier.
Mia was a really cute character and I loved her Character Interview, she really went beyond what I asked her and I hope many more people want to meet her now!

  6. Fantastic interview! I so enjoyed this story, and I’m really glad you asked Mia about the lightning Danny, we talked about wanting to know more about that! I can’t imagine the kind of craving she feels for lightning. Unless maybe we’re talking about chocolate. Then I understand a little 😉

  8. Great Character Interview! Mia still didn’t answer the question I want to know, but she did ask “Why Me?” which I wanted her to ask all through the book. So that’s something! Jeremy was cute with those Clark Kent glasses!

    Great job!

Well you have to get a book two to answer all our questions and plz let Jeremy keep the Clark Kent glasses!! Even if they are just for show! They are adorable!

    Jennifer Bosworth 5/21/2012

Oh yeah, those glasses have got to stay. I’m thinking I’ll have a schtick where the hot boys in my books always wear glasses. In the book I’m working on now, the love interest is a Russian exchange student who wears Ben Franklin style wire frame glasses. 🙂

    hrose2931 5/21/2012

LOL!!! I never thought of Ben Franklin glasses as cute, but they are those round kind and those are adorable. I have never dated a guy that didn’t wear glasses! I love a guy in glasses!!! Good schtick!

    Danny 5/17/2012

Yep, I think we truly need to wait for the next book to get our answers and I actually I’m even more intrigued right now! I loved Mia’s answers, they show what a great character she is and I hope many more people want to meet her now :))

    Jeremy… so cute!!

  9. Great interview! I liked Mia… she seemed a reasonable character. And the way she talks about Jeremy doesn’t express insta-love. At least, I HOPE there isn’t any insta-love in Struck o.O
Anyway… Now you left me anxious to read this novel. The premise is very unique 😀

The whole book is very unique! :))

  10. Haha! Yes, Jeremy is a great name, and now that I know he wears Clark Kent glasses, I can’t stop swooning. And I don’t think anyone could fault you for liking movies, they are awesome.

Fun interview. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the chance to win.

I really, really need to meet this Jeremy guy — he sounds sweetly imperfect, which is honestly the way I like my book boys best! :') (And yes, I LOVE the name Jeremy, I do!! <3)

This was such a cool interview, Danny! I loved getting to know more about Mia's lightning addiction — it sounds TERRIFYING yet cool at the same time! x)
