Why I love Reading (and Writing) Novellas by Tiffany Allee
Novellas are a bit of an oddball length when it comes to fiction. Generally ranging from 20-40k words, they’re too long to be considered a short story, and too short to be considered a novel (excepting certain genres). So why read them? Why do I bother writing them?
I absolutely love novellas for a couple of reasons. First, they give me a quick story for those times in my life where I just want to read something entertaining in one or two sittings. I get in these moods when my life is particularly stressful or hectic, and when I’m just not in the right frame of mind for a story that will take me a while to get through.
Second, I love them for trying new authors. I love discovering new writers, but even if an author is fantastic and well-loved, his or her style may not appeal to me for whatever reason. By purchasing and reading a novella to take the writer for a test drive, so to speak, I have a smaller commitment with regards to time. And I’ve generally paid a lower price.
Banshee Charmer does trend on the longer side of the novella range, but it still offers that small taste of my style. And for a couple of hours, I hope that it takes readers for a fun ride in my little world. Here’s a small excerpt from Banshee Charmer. A little nibble, if you will.

[box type=”shadow”]I pulled my 9mm from its shoulder holster and crept into my living room. Light glowed from the dining room. Pretty certain I hadn’t left a light on, I eased forward. I took a deep breath and held the air in my lungs, in case whatever waited for me couldn’t be hurt with bullets.
I swung my gun up then rounded the corner into my dining room. A man—or something that looked like one anyway—sat at the oak table. He was reading a book. A cup of coffee rested on a coaster in front of him and he’d propped sock-covered feet on my table. Settled in, right at home.
I gaped, unsure of what to say. My face grew hot when I saw the cover of the book in his hand. A beautiful woman held in the arms of a tall, too-handsome hero with abs of steel graced the cover of the romance novel. I barely resisted the urge to shoot him. Who says I don’t have fan-freaking-tastic self-control?
“Who are you?” I finally spluttered out.
He set the book down and smiled at me. It was one heck of a smile on one heck of a face. A strong jaw covered in five o’clock shadow, dark eyes, and a head of messy black hair set on a very fit, long body.
“Ah, Kiera McLoughlin, I presume?” I thought I detected a slight Irish lilt to his voice, but if he had an accent, it was subtle. He took his feet off the table, moving slowly.
“Presume away. Who are you and what are you doing in my house?”
His smiled turned into a full-on flirtatious grin. “Why don’t you put your gun away so we can talk? About your interesting taste in books, perhaps.”
I glared at him, face burning. Handsome or not, I was in charge in my own house. “No way, cupcake. Tell me who you are and I might consider putting my gun away.”
He sighed, his chest pressing against his tight T-shirt. I glared harder.
“All right. My name is Aidan Byrne. I’m here to talk to you about the murders you’re investigating.”[/box]

I enjoy reading all lengths of books. Sometimes you don't have time for a longer book, you just want a quick read. Maybe you want to start and finish a book before you leave for the day. There are many times when a shorter book is called for and there are times when a longer book is good. Can't wait to read Banshee Charmer. Thanks for the giveaway.

Definitely agree that novellas are a great way to get a sample of an author's voice before investing (financially and emotionally) in a longer work. It's the same reason I love anthologies–it's way harder to cram a full story into such a limited word count, so anthologies tend to publish the best of the best.

Yes, i do enjoy all lengths. Sometimes, depending on my mood or what i have planned, i like to get some reading in. With a full length, im usually glued to the pages, so its hard to put the book down. A short story is nice if i just want to read something in one sitting. And of course, im a book addict. I love to read, so i always have to get a fix in. lol Thank you!

I love to read fiction of all lengths. Sometimes, you just want to complete reading something and a novella makes it easy to do that. Novels, not so much. I love novels, don't get me wrong, but sometimes, I feel pressure to finish it in one sitting and I don't have the time. Novellas are perfect for sitting in the coffee shop, waiting in the doctor's office, (yeah, I wait that long) or a cozy afternoon.
